Fish - May 2007

I have a salt water hydrometer, its bottom just broke and now there is small balls of some black weights in the aquarium. The mercury didnt break, but are those weights poisonous?
(It was a salt water aquarium hydrometer)

I have 3 two inch fantails in my 29 gallon tank with a 30-55 gallon filter and a few people have posted my tank is overcrowded and that the fish will out grow my tank. Is that true? I thought they only growed to be 6-8" each.

i just got a newwhisper power filter 10 and i was wondering on the tube you put in the water to suck up the dirt there is a little nosel at the end with alot of oles on it you put it on but i was wondering if i have big peices of poop that arnt getting sucked up can i just take off the nosel with small holes and just have 1 big hole or will this not work better


p.s i dont have anyfish that are small enough to get sucked up in the hole

well my molly is preg and isunno if she has boxed because she was huge and now like all her side belly moved to the bottom shes bin in a breeding net for 2 weeks now so i know she didnt have any babies yet

One of my Black Moors has a bug stuck to her tail. It's small, flat, kinda greenish colour. I saw it swimming around the tank this week, now it's stuck to her tail. Is this bad? should I try to take it off? How did it get there? Thanks for your help!

Hi, I have 3 fantail goldfish that are about an inch and a half long in my 29 gallon tank. I have a 30-55 gallon filter in there along with an air bubbler and some fake plants and some hideouts. My question is I have been doing some research and would like to know if rosy minnows can go in there with them? I have a heater to put in there on low since my house probably gets too cold for even goldfish during the winter. Right now the tank is at 65-70 F degrees and I have read that they like the tank between 50 to 75 F and goldfish like it between 50 to 75F, so it seemed like it would work out.

1. i have 2 fish that are some kind of mollies. one of them has a very small part of its tail bitten. it doesnt eat and isnt really active, but i cant see anything wrong with it. what can it be?

2. can you use reptile water conditioner on fish? I just wanted to know because 3 of my fish died after i put it.

3. I have 2 black lyretail mollies, 3 dwarf gouramis, and 2 mollies. The tempereture is 82. Is it ok for all my fish?

I have a tank with Cichlids and a Kissing Gourami, and i'm looking for a really good aquarium snail. At the moment I have two apple snails and an algae eater, but it's not cutting it. Are there any really aggressive snails that can take care of plant matter as well as waste?

I have had 2 spwns today and both the males are hanging aroung the filters and not under the nest attending them, this is not my first time spawning but the firdst time this has happened, can any body givm me advice pse, if the eggs fall to the bottom will they die? I have put anti-fungi in the water.

they appear fine,
i tried to feed them with the lights off, (at night)
i fed them brine shrimp, (which got ignored)
tubifex worms (ignored)
regular fish flakes (ignored)
a small slice of cucumber (ignored)

im worried that theyll get weak from not eating.
the water conditions are fine,
they loaches are fine.

though they get scared easily even when i walk inside the room XD

my other fish trust me since they dont run away when i come close to feed them
but the loaches do :(

how can i solve their not eating problem? and their behavior?
(i do have alot of hiding spaces in the tank)
(the other fish seem to eat the food first therefore im worried)

Ever since I cleaned my betta fishes water out, he doesn't eat a lot anymore. He used to have a plant in there, but I replaced it with a tiny castle. Is he going to die soon? He has not eaten much before.

I'm thinking of introducing some swan mussels into my pond to help clean it up. When the larvae of swan mussels attach themselves to fish, do they cause lasting problems? The websites I've looked at say that the fish develops a cyst, but that the larva drops off when it's the right size - but no-one mentions whether or not this could be a potential problem for the fish. My pond has orfes, goldfish and shibunkins.
I'd really appreciate any personal experience on this please. Many thanks in advance!
