If this Oscar is pretty fair sized and has had the tank to himself for several months you may be almost out of luck. Oscars are territorial an will not accept tank mates readily. Assuming the tank is large enough to accommodate more than one fish of this size, you would want another South American cichlid of about the same size and temperament. Try removing the Oscar from the tank and rearranging all of the tank decor. Adding another feature or two now would also be a good idea. Then return the Oscar to the tank at the same time you add the new fish. This will keep the Oscar from trying to defend old territories and give the new fish a fighting chance. You could return the decor to the way you like it a few weeks later.

Oscars can only room with other oscars, even then the tank occupants must be females or the tank very large. Oscar males are very aggressive to each other and will carve up the tank into territories, while females are generally more good natured to their fellow species.
An all oscar tak in the 300g rane with 2-3 females and a male is a great thing to have. Oscars make awesome pets and have wonderful personalities.
If your lucky you can get a pleco into there for algae control.

it all kind of depends on your fish and tank size, i have a 30gal with 2 oscars and a tin foil barb and they are as happy as can be, you would be safe with almost and cichlid considering an oscar is a member of the cichlid family, i agree with magicman116 in that it would be a good idea to rearrang the tank and landscape when you add a new fish, but also take the size of your existing fish and the size of a potential new tank mate into consideration, if you add a small fish to a tank that only has one large resident the larger fish will surely see it as "hunting time"

Wow People think Oscars eat everything but their own species. I have a 9 inch Oscar that has lived with a Malawian cichlid 4 inches, and a Firemouth Cichlid 3 inches. The Malawian cichlid lasted about a month died naturally (not eaten), but the firemouth cichlid has been alive in my tank for over a year now. So if u have a Oscar, i recommend getting Cichlids the same size or bigger.
