I have tetras, bala sharks, and angel fish, and was wondering how to best care for my fish, beyond what the pet store dude says.

Well, none of these are really saltwater fish - they don't live in marine conditions, although you can add a small amount of non iodized salt to their tanks. About 1 tablespoon per gallon of water is all you would need to add. There is a saltwater angelfish, but if you're keeping all three species together, that's not what you have!

Tetras are schooling fish, so you should keep them in groups of 5+ according to each species you have. The balas are also schooling, but can be kept in a group as small as three. Angels are semi-aggressive (they're cichlids), and as adults, they'll pair off and establish (and defend) territories in the tank. All will need a water temperature of at least 76o. As adults, the angels will get to be around 6" (and taller than long), the balas will get around a foot (and these are very active swimmers, so you need a tank with space for them to move). The tetras can vary in size from around 1 1/2" (neons, which the adult angels will probably eat) to some that get closer to 3".

All the fish will eat flakes and pellets, but should be given occasional live (frozen) foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms as treats and to supplement their diets.
