How long do i need to wait to have my tank completely cycled? And is there anything that will speed it up??

Thanks to all that responded regarding my goldfish with the large lumpy growth.

Your info made me look further into Lymphocystis. The growth is a large cream cauliflower lump that have lots of spots that are red (may have had small explosions).

He recently seem to be staying at the bottom of the tank. Could it be too heavy for him to swim around? Should I try to cut some of it off and then isolate him with a treatment? If yes, what treatment other than a very healthy tank of water with added salt.

Thanks again!

My brother wants to give me a fish tank that was used for salt water, will I be able to use this tank for fresh water fish? Is there something specific that I have to use to clean the tank of the salt build up it has?

I just got a 20 gallon tank off of freecycle, but the thing is, it has a 10 gallon footprint! I like having live plants in my tank, but what kind of lighting would I need to keep them alive that far away from the bulbs? Should I put hood lights as well as an outside light in the back, or would that be unnecessary?
I'm also worried a bit about enough oxygen getting in there for the fish with such a small surface to water ratio. Will a 20 gallon pump work alright, or do I need something special for this? I'm only using it for guppies, and I'm not planning on super stocking it.

Metro, the gold severum, has been growing REALLY quickly. As you probably all know, these are one of the hardest breeds to sex while still juveniles. Metro is as big around as my blood parrot now and had started developing the typical severum face "squiggles" in red. The lines are mainly on his/her upper jaw (still white on the lower). Any ideas of what sex it is?

Question Details: strong bubble(airstone) in small tank produces a thick layer of air bubbles at the top, not foamy but theres lots of them, will this interfere with dissolved oxygen levels? ?

This goldfish is a pond fish that we bring in over the winter. He is about 4 years old and lives with other older goldfish with no signs of problems. The first summer in the pond he came out with a bent tail and a small growth on the side of his face. The growth appear to have disappeared briefly and came back growing quickly. My research was that it was a harmless wart that will eventually drop off. The goldfish seems normal – eating, swimming, etc., but the kids and visitors thinks the growth looks awful. I hope you can tell me what it is and what I can do about it.

In my tank of P. Lanisticola, I found a female with a mouth bursting with eggs. They all seem to be yellowish in color, which means they are fertilized, right? I noticed about a week ago that she looked like MAYBE she was holding, and in the last couple of days, her "chin" has really filled up. It's thus about 7 days since she has been noticeably filling up. How long until I should expect to see fry. I separated her into nursery tank. Also, I can leave her with them for the first few days after hatching right? Thanks so much

i have a 39 tank (since valentines day) with 2 cichlids,2 platys,4 cherry barbs, a few bottom feeders (lace cats and plecostomus), and a beta. the beta is sequestered from the other fish (once the beta escaped and got his fins chewed off... he is still in the process of regrowing them). I feed the other fish tetramin and tetracichlid, but i feed the beta exclusively freeze dried blood worms. the back of the container says "feed in conjunction with other tetra primary foods." i never even realized this until today. i really have 2 questions---- is it unhealthy for my beta to have an exclusive blood worm diet and 2 should i be feeding a couple blood worms / week to the cichlids?

So I want to get a big fish tank some day and have Oranda's or other fancy tails. Right now I have a red cap oranda in a tank just for him. How would I go about starting a new tank and introducing him to it someday, and then how should I go about adding more fish? I'm guessing if I get a tank in the 30-50 gallon range I should only get a few more fish? My thinking right now on how to add fish would be to do so one at a time. Move the little dude into the new tank, get another one and add him to the old tank for quarantine, and then once he looks OK and healthy add him to the new tank, and then get a another little dude and start all over again? I don't want to get a super huge tank b/c we may be moving after only a few years. Also, I def want a tank from the Biowheel series because he is in one now and it is FANTASTIC! I'll be on a budget so I'm not looking to buy any more tanks for the purpose of quarantining (the one I have now is not big enough for more than one fish at a time).

Basically, I want to fix down the plastic tubing on my aeration system to the edge and bottom of the tank so that it doesn't float up, but was wondering if I could use some form of sticky tape like sellotape. Would it harm the fish/ contain some chemical that would be released into the water?

I am trying to grow these little animals called triops. They are kind of like sea monkeys, except they are bigger, like crabs. Has anyone grown them and do they work? I need some help, because they look a little too intense for me.

My betta has a fungus thing. Melafix didn't work. I'm not sure if its a fungus or a parasite so I am wondering, what is the best all-purpose medication that they sell at walmart? We're going there today. And there are no pet stores around where we live except one an hour away.

I finally got a friend for Jeannie like a month after Johnnie died. as soon as I put her in he tank they became best friends. the new goldfish is a pearlscale named Pearly Mae.

the problem is I'm worried she's going to starve to death. now this isn't the usual case of new tank, to nervous to eat. I'm beginning to think she formerly lived in a test lab where every time they fed her they'd electrocute her lol. every time pick up the can of food she swims under the filter and sits on the rocks behind some plants, completely hidden. I thought maybe pellet food would be better (couldn't use it because Johnnie would only eat flake so I only had flake). so I soaked the pellets, as always, and plopped them in the water. they slowly drifted down but before they even got an inch from the top of the water Jeannie swam over and ate one. one pellet drifted down to where Pearly Mae was hiding, she saw it and swam away in horror.

help?! it's been over a week and she's losing a lot of weight.
