Wow, that leaves the field wide pen. A tank full of small schooling fish can have wonderful color and activity. A few small african cichlids can make a home there and become a breeding colony, or maybe a pair of a nice south American cichlids like firemouths or angels that also would also spawn regularly in the tank. Of course with a tank that size there is a huge number of very nice african or south American cichlids that would be good for a single specimen in the tank. loads of great choices, you need to thing about your style and what would look god to you then narrow down species that would work for that style.

If you have little or no experience keeping fish then you will want to get some hardy fish. Avoid fish that will grow very large like Oscars. I suggest getting either some smaller schooling fish like Danios or Rasboras. In addition to that you can get a center piece fish or pair of fish. Pearl Gouramis are tough and peaceful. A pair of them would look nice with a school of those other fish I mentioned. If you want to go with Cichlids, you can't go wrong with the very tough Convict Cichlid. A pair of those would do very well in your 55 gallon tank.

If i had a completley empty 55 gallon tank to do whatever i wanted to,.... i would get an oscar. According to my local supply guy they are his favorite freshwater fish because of their personality.

I think cichlids are the best fish, personally. But it depends what you're looking for. Do you want schooling fish, dainty swimmers, beauty, larger fish? Give us an idea, we'll give you TONS :)

If you don't feel like a boring old fish (jk they aren't too boring) you should get a rabbit, guinea pig, hamsters or mice and put some bedding in the tank. they are fun and you can actually play with them! only if you want tho.
peace, and good luck finding a pet. =)
