Thanks to all that responded regarding my goldfish with the large lumpy growth.

Your info made me look further into Lymphocystis. The growth is a large cream cauliflower lump that have lots of spots that are red (may have had small explosions).

He recently seem to be staying at the bottom of the tank. Could it be too heavy for him to swim around? Should I try to cut some of it off and then isolate him with a treatment? If yes, what treatment other than a very healthy tank of water with added salt.

Thanks again!

Lymphocystis a possibility for sure although it usually presents as several smaller warty looking lumps on the fins and skin of the fish. To the best of my knowledge there is no reliable treatment for lymphocystis.

It is currently not known all of the methods of how the Lymphocystis virus is transmitted so a strict quarantine of the affected fish would be a very good idea. If the fish survives the intal infection, after several months the warty growths usually fall off and heal. The majority of infected fish never redevelop symptoms. Do not try to remove the growth as it will cause considerable bleeding and probably allow contamination of other fish as well as open the infected fish to bacterial and fungus infections.

Best of luck with him.

Oh! Sorry about your goldfish!!

But as for the lump --Do NOT try to cut it off. There may be ALOT of blood cells under it and he can bleed to death.

I had a goldfish (7 years old) who had a growth on his head. I examined it, did all I could for him, thought of cutting it off and then realize there were ALOT of blood cells and veins in that growth -- it would have killed him if I cut it even the tiniest bit -- he would have bled to death.

IF there is a treatment for Lymphocystis, then by all means, try it -- I would suggest that whatever treatment you use, start with Half a dosage. I unfortunately killed two beautiful goldfish once when I treated their fin rot with the dosage that was recommended-- if I had given em half a dosage instead, it would have started to help heal them....I still feel bad about that.

Well, good luck with your fish!!!
