Yep, you need to clean it by hand, but that doesn't have to be a long or hard chore. Use a gravel siphon, available from any pet store to clean the gravel as you remove about 25% of the tank water. Replace the water with fresh tap water that has been dechlorintated (drops for this are at the pet store too) and is of a similar temperature to the tank. Replace the filter cartridge every 3-4 weeks and your basically done. You can remove algae when you do these changes by wiping or scraping it off the glass or decorations. Doesn't take but a few minutes a week and that will keep your tank healthy and clean.

Hope that helps

when i clean my tank i do this about once a year months because the fish get a lil traumatized by it but i take a large clean glass or bowl depending on how big he is and i fill it with there old fish water then i empty half the of the dirty water out add new room temp water that i took from the tap and let it sit over night to reduce the colorene in it and fill it up with that i drop some amino loock in there to protect against amonia and put the lil guys back in there.

for the rest of the year i use a lil vacume that sucks all the nasty stuff up off the bottom that the filter missed

Well it depends how big the fish are. If they are small then all you have to do is take a large bowl or pan, fill it with water and transfer the fish into that. Make sure the bowl is not to hot or cold. Then you clean the tank (try to make it fast just for sureity). Once you're done place everything back in properly and then insert the fish back into it. Hope that helps!

Depends how dirty it is. They do make items you can put in the tank to help keep them clean, but if its already pretty filthy you probably will need to take the fish out and clean it.
Put your fish in a different container (with water of course) empty the water out of the tank. dont try to pick up a full tank with water in it, they can be very heavy. Clean it out, refill it, oh-take the temp of the tank before you empty it then try to get it to the same temp after you refill it before you put your fish back in.

Gravel vacuum with weekly water changes of about 20%. Gold fish are messy and most tanks are overstocked. The only chance for their survival is high levels of maintenance.
Room temperature is fine for gold fish. Outdoors, ponds fine so long as they don't completely freeze over and prevent oxygen from reaching the water.
So long as the changes are fairly gradual, gold fish have been bred to be highly adaptive.

You absolutely need to clean it by hand. the temp should be about standard for freshwater fish - between 70 and 80 degrees F. So basically, you should do what you would do for a typical freshwater aquarium.

Scrub the inside glass with a clean sponge to get rid of the green algae, do a partial water change using day old water and get a pleco fish to clean further algae growth.

You only drain half the water out, then refill with the stilled water. It can be much easier by using an inexpensive filter.
