This goldfish is a pond fish that we bring in over the winter. He is about 4 years old and lives with other older goldfish with no signs of problems. The first summer in the pond he came out with a bent tail and a small growth on the side of his face. The growth appear to have disappeared briefly and came back growing quickly. My research was that it was a harmless wart that will eventually drop off. The goldfish seems normal – eating, swimming, etc., but the kids and visitors thinks the growth looks awful. I hope you can tell me what it is and what I can do about it.

It sounds like Carp Pox. Symptoms look worse than the effect on the fish though. It's caused by a virus that recedes when temperatures rise, allowing the fish to fight itself. No medicines actually work on this.

the element is a wholesome goldfish WILL improve. the only reason they wont improve is that in the event that they're being saved in adverse situations and are stunted via nitrate poisoning or loss of nutrition. You cant call that a wholesome fish, this is one step far flung from a dull fish. A wholesome fancy goldfish could stay for extra or less 10 years and improve to six" long. a client-friendly or comet can relatively stay for 2 a protracted time and would improve to twelve". Thats why they choose super tanks, 20+gal for fancies and 50+ for comets. while they're smaller then a smaller tank is okay, yet long term they choose the area. holding them in a tank for a 12 months or 2 then shifting them to an outdoors pond and changing them with extra infant ones would be a reliable option. There is a breed of gold fish that do infact grow a wrinkled type growth on his brow but I am not sure of the name of species of fish.
If this growth comes and goes I would be inclined to think it is some kind of scar type tissue that probably comes as goes as the fish grows.
Fish are exposed to alot of bacteria etc that reacts differently on each fish so I suspect this may be part of your dilemma.
If the fish seems normal otherwise and has lived to be 4yrs old I suspect he is doing ok regardless of how he looks. . . probably much like the people who look at him.
We're all human but some of have growths or some other thing that is different from others and I guess it's OK if the same happens to this fish. . . .We are ALL unique in our own way.

Ditto to carp pox virus, it's really one of the very few things that can come and go like you describe.

I think it could be a type of cancer. I heard fish can have cancer. I think maybe you should go to the pet store and ask them.
