It's been over 4 months now and our 28 gallon hasn't cycled yet. We've used the product Bio-Spira twice on it and have had fish in it (unfortunatly) since Jan 1st.
I've tested the water almost every single day, and when it seems like things are looking good.. all of a sudden.. BAM.. ammonia starts to rise again for no reason.
I have do about 30% water changes every other day to ensure the fish are as less stressed as possible, but I know this wouldn't cause the tank to take this long.

The first month, everything was going great, ammonia went up, nitrite showed up, ammonia went down, nitrite went down, and nitrate rose. Then one day.. ammonia was gone.. YAY.. but 2-3 days later... ammonia started to show on the tests again.
And just recently after we used Bio-Spira again to try to get things started... ammonia readings, nitrite readings, some nitrate.... then one day.. POOF.. no more nitrite, but still have ammonia.
What is going on??

Two of my fancy male guppies mated with a wild guppy . She has no specs of color, one male is yellow with an orange tail, and the other is blue with a really long tail. The only 2 male offspring (that survived) are nearly adults and show wild guppy characteristics (colored specs), but no long tail or bright, bold colors. I read that blue is a recessive gene, but wouldn't the offspring be more colorful? (I'm surprised!)

my uncle recently gave me and my boyfriend his old saltwater tank and filteration system which i think is a premier wet/dry trickle filter with prefilter boxes. it has all the works, bio balls and everything. i was just wonder, since it was originally a saltwater system and tank and was used for salt water, can i just clean out the bio balls and system and use it for freshwater? I'm no stranger to freshwater just saltwater, any advice or helpful answers would be strongly appreciated.

My water is terrible, can anyone help me fix it or tell me fish that will live in it?

I do regular water changes, vacuum the bottom. I have few fish in this 20 gallon and 2 of them are catfish. I've got some good live plants going. Here are my latest test results. Are there any fish that will live in this water and thrive?

Nitrate(NO3) ppm (mg/L) - 200
Nitrite(NO2) ppm (mg/l) - 0
Hardness ppm - 250
Alkalinity ppm - 180
pH - 6.4

I have had my fish tank for two months the first four fish I had all got ick and died. I cycled out my water and waited a month before adding new fish. Yesterday one of my molly's died. My other molly and my plecostamous see to be just fine (no ick signs). I panicked yesterday and topped off my water, added water treatment, stress coat and PH and Ammonia balance. Today my tank is white cloudy and algea seems to have popped up in large amounts. What should I do????? Please help me so I don't kill these fish.

I have a newly set up 10 gallon fish tank. I had 6 neon tetras, a black molly, a silver hatchetfish and two guppies. But My guppies died tonight. The tails of the guppies were shreded. Are the fish attacking the guppies or is it something with the water?

I was given a 10 gallon tank and 2 fish (1 male betta & a small orange fish- maybe tetra). The tank is too large for just the 2 fish, so I want to get a few more. What kind of fish can I get that won't fight with the betta or eat the smaller one? I have a water heater, filter, gravel, and 5 plastic plants, if this makes any difference. Any suggestions for my new tank?
By the way, I am a college student and I need inexpensive fish.

I cleaned out my fish tank the other day. (I only have guppies.) They started dying before I even changed the water - I had only drained some of it out.

I thought it might have been my 20month old - he was up there playing in the water that morning. But they are still dying, and that was two days ago.

I've put the water conditioner and chlorine remover in there. All the fish keep swimming around the top of the tank. What have I done wrong and what should I do? (It is my first time changing the water since I got the tank from my sister - I'm a newbie.)

The tank does have a filter, so I don't know why the fish aren't getting enough oxygen in the water.

I have had my goldfish for about 2 months now. She was a baby when i got her and has almost doubled in size (to give you some age range for you if that helps). She was a dark silver color with a few dark spots over her head and spine but over the past three das has turned a lighter silver color. Her spots haven't lightened tho, they're still dark. Any idea what's causing this? Her water is fine, she eats good, and the other fish she lives with hasn't changed color...is she just getting older or what?
