As soon as I got my rescue fish home, I looked around the house for a "water plant" that was non-toxic to put in with him as a "soother". I had some Lucky Bamboo ( Dracena / Dracaena sanderiana ) and I cut off a 2" section that had new growth on it. I am awaiting receipt of ordered Java Moss and Ball Moss so I didn't want to shell out too much more for plants in the meantime. I put it in the tank and the old growth section floats and lets the new shoots hang down. They have been munching on the greens and seem to enjoy using it to hide and play. They particularly seem to like the green outer layer of the old growth. If I plan to use this like a treat/ snack and change it out regularly, can you see any harm in that? Since they are enjoying it, what I figure is that when I do a complete tank change once a week, I'll change out the bamboo and use the old ones as cuttings to grow more.

I've tried gravel cleaners in the past, and they just dont cut it after the first few uses. Is there a gravel cleaner that works, or should I just resort to the underground filter. I've heard + and - things about it, so I'm unsure about what to do, Please help

4/18 I found a betta at Walmart in about 1" of water which was very blue. I could only tell he was light-colored - I thought he might be coral, light pink or white. My son wanted to rescue him and I agreed. We got him out, got him in a decent bowl. We're caring for him according to the better betta sites. He was flesh colored with orange/ red fins. His colors get richer every day. I know he won't get back to his actual color until he finishes getting comfy. He seems to be a happy little guy - swimming around, making bubbles, eating and pooping and doing what bettas are supposed to do EXCEPT: He looks "dirty" despite all water care - started as spots, now looks like dark vertical stripes - they sort of follow his fin stripes. Pix at http://new.photos.yahoo.com/deborahgrand/album/576460762399515695 . Last night, at same store light colored bettas looked like scales had black tips - some had every "scale outlined". What is this and what to do to cure? Thx! Deborah

I have had my tank set up for over 2 weeks now and there have been no problems. I have 2 iridescent sharks and 2 black fin sharks [both catfish I know] I was told the iridescents would end up being tough to keep alive but I haven't had any problems with them either. But now my smallest black fin shark is lying on the bottom alot and swimming to the corners of the tank. She won't swim unless something provokes her, and now she is swimming on her side and back as if disoriented. I've been feeding them Tropical Flakes. Their water is a little dirty and that is the first thing I was going to do, but I don't know if that might hurt my sick fish more. I tried isolating it and feeding it to see if the more aggressive fish were keeping food from it [the iridescents are ravenous] but she didn't eat then either. What should I do?

Here's the website.

http://www.theoscarspot.com/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=49&topic=2650.0

and here's the content of the website to which I'm referring.

A. Primary euthanasia methods for fish (methods that can be used alone) include:

1. MS-222/TMS- dosage: 50 to 250 mg/L
[buffered to pH 7.0 with sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3)]
Note: Fish euthanized with MS-222 cannot be used for human consumption.

2. Benzocaine-dosage: 50 to 500 mg/L
Note: Fish euthanized with Benzocaine cannot be used for human consumption.

3. Exposure to a solution saturated with carbon dioxide (CO2):
When possible, carbon dioxide should be used from a compressed gas cylinder source. However, neither the 1993 nor the 2000 Report of the AVMA Panel on Euthanasia address the issue of the source/production of carbon dioxide as it relates to aquatic animal species. The use of chemical methods for the production of carbon dioxide, such as a saturated solution of sodium bicarbonate or Alka-Seltzer ®, has been proven quite effective with fish as noted in the literature. When dosed adequately sodium bicarbonate renders rapid loss of consciousness and death (4,6). As a result, the use of carbon dioxide liberated by chemical means will also be acceptable for the euthanasia of fish when compressed carbon dioxide gas cylinders cannot be used. Individuals who have demonstrated competency with this technique to qualified personnel (i.e. aquatic animal veterinarian or his/her designate) should perform the euthanasia of fish by carbon dioxide.

Sodium bicarbonate dosage: (30g/L or 120g/gallon)

Alka-Seltzer ® dosage: (1 tablet/ 20L or 2 tablets/ 10gallons)
Note: Fish euthanized with sodium bicarbonate or Alka-Seltzer® should not be used for human consumption.

Protocol: Fish should be placed into a container with an appropriate volume of water that will provide free movement of fish to be euthanized. Water should then be saturated with carbon dioxide from either a compressed gas cylinder (via the use of an air stone with a moderate flow rate for ~5-10 minutes) or by dissolving enough sodium bicarbonate or Alka-Seltzer® into the water (via the dosages previously provided). Fish should be removed only after ten minutes have passed since their last observed opercular movements (respiration) have occurred.

catfish looks aggressive while goldfish and koifish doesn't. I would like to know whether those can be put in a tank together. Is there any special advantage for catfish like helps to clean the tank or so? Does they stay in the lower water levels most of the time?

If i am planting some small non-floating plants, will anyof these fishes destroy the plants?

Am getting back into breeding Bettas but am overwhelmed again by colours and patterns. Previously I worked a lot with butterfly and 'mustard gas' types, and a lot with blue and greens.

I prefer crowntails, halfmoon, supadelta and wild-type/short finned, and don't like double tail.

So, where shall I start this time? Any ideas or preferences?

I have a Silver Dollar who has a white fungus disease. He is very sick and I do not think he will recover. So what is the best way to end his suffering?

I had an Angelfish who had the same disease but much worse, so I put her in a jar with water and froze her. Did she have a painful death?

I have 2 female platies who are about 2 years old each. They are very large and round and generally healthy. Recently they seemed even fatter than usual. For a few days they were hiding in the plants, I assume giving birth. Now they are swimming around, but seem to like swimming tipped forward, with their noses down, tails in the air. They are eating and seem happy. One has what looks like one loose scale. Should I worry?
