I have a newly set up 10 gallon fish tank. I had 6 neon tetras, a black molly, a silver hatchetfish and two guppies. But My guppies died tonight. The tails of the guppies were shreded. Are the fish attacking the guppies or is it something with the water?

The fish are NOT attacking your guppies! The molly, neons and hatchetfish are peaceful and are not a problem to other fish at all. Your problem is in fact the water.

You said it was a newly set up tank. Your tank is not cycled and you are seeing the results of excess ammonia in the water. It will kill the fish and damage fins both.

First thing, do a 50% water change to reduce the ammonia levels before it kills the other fish as well. If you don't have an ammonia test kit, get one. The liquid style kits are far better than the test strips, so go that route.

You will need to test the water daily and change water whenever it gets into the danger zone according to your test kit. This may take as much as 3 weeks, but eventually bacteria will colonize the tank and convert the ammonia into less harmful material.

So change 1/2 the water, plan your stop at the pet store tomorrow and in the mean time take a few minutes to read the site I am linking below. It will completely explain what is going on in your tank and how to best deal with it. Its worth the few minutes read, trust me.

Hope this helps and if I can help any further feel free to email me.

yes your fish were attacked and would have been the molly. i had a molly in with my guppies and the next day 4 of them were dead. i recommend get the molly out because the tetras will attack that. the tetras should be fine with the silver hatchetfish.

Just for the record it would not be the neons. I own neons and they are the most passive fish have ever seen - they are not the ones doing it - id say look out for the molly and hatchetfish

In such crowded conditions normally peaceful fish will fight for space. Normally bullying would drive off the competion easily, but in a tank theres no where to go so they keep at it till the others die.

Just take back the non neons and trade them in for 4 more neons.

1.Your tank is overcrowded.
2.Either the tails got caught in the filter, or the fins were eaten by the fish.
3.Try to do a partial water change.

Yes you have a bad combination. Neon Tetras are aggressive fish and will attack your molly, hatchet fish, and guppies. And since your tetras outnumber all your other fish, you are putting your fish at major risk. And since you told us that their tails were shredded we can assume that the Tetras bit them

The guppies are being attacked. It's the neons for sure...they attack almost anything. They shred fins, they love it.
