A sump can work, and work safely. The whole idea is to have overflows near the tops of the tanks and enough free space in the sump so that if anything happens to the pump (very rare) the water will stop draining long before it can flow over the side of the sump. Another advantage to the sump is that you can put other equipment like heaters into it. The disadvantages are having to drill the tanks and provide the plumbing.

For just 3 or 4 little tanks like that, I'd just get separate filters and call it a day.

The only possible solution is to buy 3 or 4 filters. Go online at Petco and order the one(s) with the highest rating.

i agree with ghapy... it is definately posible to use a sump for all with overflows but for the time and work just spend the few bucks on hanging filters.

I'm not saying it couldn't be done, but proceed with much care. This is an invitation to major water spills.Systems like this are very susceptible to power outages and other accident causing problems. ----Good luck, and wishing you excellent engineering.----PeeTee
