I just bought some painted glass fish and now I'm reading that they're not the best fish to keep. Is this true?

I feel sorry for those poor little fish!! I'll do my best to take good care of them..I don't care if they lose their color as long as they live.

Most very serious aquarium keepers don't support the practice of dying or painting fishes so these guys are often left in the shop. That however doesn't mean they aren't a good aquarium fish. Know in advance that the dye will fade over time and eventually will not be noticable at all. To me that is when they become their best. Indian glass fish, painted or not, are peaceful community fish that are quite hardy and generally make good community fish. They are tolerant of a wide range of pH, hardness and temperature and will readily feed on most any food placed in their tank. To me, that makes them a pretty good aquarium fish.

As for the painted ones, the only real difference is they are far more prone to carrying a virus called lymphocystis. It will not kill the fish and is not contagious under normal aquarium conditions but will cause large white spots to occur on the fishes body. These will eventually disappear and will probably not reoccur once gone. Approximately 10% of all wild glass fish have this and about 12% of all farm raised glass fish have it. In painted glass fish the number is estimated to be about 40%. It is currently assumed the process of injecting the dye and the reuse of dirty needles is to blame.

Keep them, give them a good home and enjoy their natural beauty after the paint fades away.

If you have any other questions feel free to email

They tend to have a shorter life span than just glass fish because they are injected with a dye that ruins them, basically.
Some live, while other's done. Chances are they won't live very long, despite your best efforts at making their habitat suitable.
Any fish with neon colours, tattoos or questionable looking patterns are usually injected and die very soon after the process.

It's not your fault, a lot of people make the mistake. I just feel sorry for your fish. =/

The fish you bought has been injected with a hole bunch of colors or might have been laser colored. Either way, its lifespan has been much shortened. I personally dont care, they dont look nice to me, because i prefer natural colors, but besides they are very sluggish and dont like to move. They are very sensitive to water levels and die easily. If i were you i would take care of him or ask to exchange him with another fish

I have had them, they were great! The gravel was black, the background was black with neon streaks. Fun tank.

Now reading the link just provided, I feel bad about it. I was a teenager back then. I had no idea. I have not seen them in years and years now. I guess that article explains why..

If you bought them all colored than probebly not. Those fish are shot up with those colors. Its injected which unfortunately shortens their lifespan.
