It might be free-floating algae as opposed to the algae that anchors on the glass, gravel, or other places. This is usually a reslut of too much light and too many nutrients in the tank. Keep your light off for a few days (unless you have live aquatic plants), or at least reduce your photoperiod. Do a few partial water changes to lower any nitrates or phosphates in the water. You might also want to test your tapwater to be sure there aren't nitrates if you use that as your water source - if there are, you might need to switch to reverse osmosis water or a use a filter that will remove organics before adding the tap water to your tank. If you continue to have problems, try using a phosphate pad in the tank - many water companies add phosphate to keep pipes from corroding.

If its algae you would want to scrape the inside of the glass and make sure you have fish that eat algae such as Black Mollys and other live bearers as well as Catfish etc.

Bbe sure not to over feed! You may want to run your aquarium light for fewer hours. In the past I have had to clean the aquarium good, particularly gravel. Do you have a gravel vacuum.

Is the tank in front of a window? If so, you will need to move it unless you want alot of green algae. The only real way to get rid of the stuff is to do alot of water changes, it will gradually disipate.
