Fish - March 2007

[Selected]: All categories Pets Fish

I recently took my housemate's fish into protective custody -- they had been dropped off at our house, stuck in a pitcher half full of chlorinated tap water, "fed" bread crumbs, and left for a week -- by the time I took them they were near death. I did some research and got the fish much healthier with water changes, food, etc.

Now I have a complete aquarium set up with the goldfish, zebra danio, and bloodfin tetra (I think). I now know that the danio and tetra are shoaling fish and would be happier with more of their kind, but I'm concerned because my tank is only five gallons (and I'm a poor college student who really can't buy another one), plus there's the goldfish in there, too. Will my danio and tetra shoal together? Which type should I get more of? How many? The tank is still cycling, so I don't intend to get more fish for awhile, but I want to plan.

Also, will my goldfish keep growing? He's currently sick (ammonia, I'm working on it) and very small...

Thanks!

Today I did research for my mom because she bought goldfish without learning how to take care of them first and I pointed out that they're suffocating (swimming at the surface for air) so my dad went and bought a 10 gallon tank for them but he hasn't set it up yet. I'm sorta worried they won't be able to deal with it long enough to make it to the new aquarium. About how long can fish go like that before they give up and die?

I just bought a leather coral (kind of has a potato type skin with fingery things on it) and it's attached to two small rocks. Is there a way to finesse it to anchoring to one of my live rocks instead ?

I've posted several questions on here before reguarding Goldfish, as I'm still new to keeping aquariums. And unlike my cousin, I researched and asked questions BEFORE I bought my goldfish.

Anyway, my cousin, age 23 or so came to visit and she really liked my Ryukin fantail, Charlie. Sure enough, a few days later, she went and bought some for her kids. Her children are about ages 11 and 12. And like alot of younger kids, arn't ready for the responsibility of a pet (especially a fish).

Anyway, she told me she bought some fish and told me to come over and see them sometime.I went there expecting to see 2 pretty Black Moores(sp?) but instead was met with the VERY saddening sight of a white Lionhead Oranda COVERED in a fungus outbreak and floating at the top on his side with an apparent swimbladder problem.(Not dead) And her other calico was sick with something, because his dorsal fin was constantly clamped.

I told her its probably ich or a fungal outbreak..(continuted with edit)

I am trying to find out what this salt water aquarium thing is. I have them in my tank. The worm has a head like a sea apple, the body is slimmer than a pencil and is redish-brown and transparent offset coloration. It uses the tentecles (like on an anemone or sea apple) to crawl around the leaves and rest of the tank. When it is scared it will pull back, like a feather duster, but w/o a tube to go into. I can take pics and send if it will help. I dont think they are harmfull to the tank. Please let me know if you know what it is. I haven't seen them anywhere in the inverts section of any Website. I have some regular clear ones as well. I think they came in on the live rock and took a while 'til I could see them or something. I don't know how else they could have gotten there.

I have two male bettas that have been in the same 10 gallon tank for about 2 weeks now. They have seen eachother and have even swam right by each other. They have never flared at each other or anything, though they did flare at my two other swordtail fish. I was changing tank mates when they were put together and now that i see they do fine together, i am thinking about just leaving them with eachother. I kno its not the best idea but i was just wondering whats going on.

I have just added my clownfish to my tank 2 days ago. My tank was cycled and all my readings zero they were going fine swimming around and having a great time. Yesterday my nitrite reading started to rise so i did a 25% water change. When i got up this morning they were both in the top corner or the tank not doing much. Are they okay??

This is a question for you guys to answer for yourselves.
Let us pretend you had 1 million dollars and you were told you can buy anything involving fresh water fish(tank, fish, filter, gravel, plants, etc..) how would you spend the money, what fish would you buy. Write in this post what you would do and be extremely descriptive i want to know what everyone thinks a good fish tank will be. Also try to be reasonable with the tank size dont tell me 5gbchillion gallon tank.

Let me share this with you. I was clearing out my garden pond yesterday at 4.30pm, and took out a great clump of overgrown oxygenating plant. I checked through it to see if any of my 3 goldfish were in it, and I could not see any. Leaving this clump on the path until today (5pm), I saw to my horror one of my prized fish lying amongst the now dry plants - itself dry and splatered with dirt. I picked it up ready to give it a sad but honory burial, when I noticed a small movement. With that, I placed it back in the water, and within 30 minutes,it was swimming with his two mates again. Now how on earth can a fish survive for 24 hours out of water? Answer me that, oh wise ones. I now call this fish David Blane. His next trick is to survive a fish soup, boiled in a saucepan for 20 minutes - only kiddin'!! The pond story is true - honest!

This happens when I wash the tank and yes, I have indeed used soap but I rinse well. Ummm, but even adding new fish, they die and their bodies do curve. Why is this? Anyone that can help me out I really appreciate it. :)

I don't say this often but: Help?
