the amonia level in my tank is fine... so is the PH... what else could be the reason they are up there with their mouths out of the water? I'm worried..

That's usually a sign of low oxygen in the water. But also remember guppies are a top water fish and will spend some time doing exactly what you describe. Assuming your filter provides movement of the water across the surface, it's most likely nothing to worry about. There are a few long shot answers such as gill fungus or parasites, but if this is the only thing they are doing out of the ordinary I wouldn't be too concerned, but do watch for any other signs of disease or unusual behavior.

Use your judgment; they are obviously acting in a way which is causing your concern. Guppies may use the top level of the tank but if they are perpetually up there, and inactive, with a high respiration rate then you seem to have a problem.

Your ammonia is fine - does this mean 0 ? Ammonia should be 0 in a properly cycled tank.

You have to also test for nitrite and nitrates - higher than 0 ppm nitirite and higher than 20 ppm nitrates will also cause lack of oxygen.

You should be using a liquid test kit; API master kit is great. The strip tests are often inaccurate.

Until you know your nitrite and nitrates (and ammonia) level accurately you won't know if this is the problem; it probably is.

You should also check your stocking levels; how many fish are in the tank and what size is it.

Finally, if the term 'cycle' is not familiar to you, do a google search, or go to e.g. aquariacentral.com.

I hope this helps your fish and you.

You should put a pump in your tank to increase the oxygen (O) level in the water. It can also be put right by putting some plants in the tank or reducing the amount of fish in the tank. But over all bubbles in your tank look very nice as well as fixing your problem.

My guppies hang out at the top of the water line because they are top feeders and guppies are good at two things: eating and making little guppies.

Usually means they are sick or a lack of oxygen in the water

Maybe they are sick?
