I already asked this when it first "appeared". The most informative I got was the first answer here: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AmQJ9Y6Zsnzv5NVeMlZQoojsy6IX?qid=20070308101740AAqLWc7

I also posted in the fish column asking how everyone else felt about it: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=At84NnbI5G0BjIRBaF7SM2Hsy6IX?qid=20070308101610AAiPgQ2

Personally, I don't like them - other than it's nice to know where the expertise of the answerers lies. As Danielle Z in the second question pointed out, just because someone has a top contributer in "automotive" wouldn't qualify them to answer questions in fish.

I think it's just going to lead to problems - yesterday, people were giving "thumbs down" ratings to a lot of the people who had them - regardless of the quality of the answers. So I guess they want people to belive that all problems are ich (even if symptoms don't fit), using dechlorinator will solve all your problems, and you just need to let water sit 24 hrs in a new tank before you can use it - not that these answers are wrong, but they aren't always right, either. If people are coming here, they need CORRECT advice. And those of us with the banner may not always have the "best" answer. Some of the new people out there are pretty knowledgeable, and I think this is just going to discourage them!

See my questions as stated in the links for other objections I have to this latest "feature".

I totally agree with copperhead here and have noticed in the Fish especially, those new or not with banners are thumbs downing the best answers given. Sometimes all the answers are thumbs down. Or better yet, have you seen some of these answers, like I don't know. Why should I care or just ***%%%. I don't like how they are giving the banners nor see the reason to have them in the first place.

After reading the guidelines for answers again, I think if more people would report abuse for these types of answers the better off those who need help will be.

The more you answer in a particular category, and the more Best Answers you get (not the percentage) the more likely you are to get a "top contributor" badge next to your name, up to 3 categories. Levels, and points have nothing to do with it. I have it for answering in Yahoo 360 and Yahoo Answers categories, neither of which am I on the leaderboard, but I have been answering alot of questions in these categories recently. I do lead the category DIY and I do not have "top contributor" for that category, but I haven't answered much in that one for a while.

Here's the link to the latest blog entry from the A-Team explaining, in a little more detail, "Top Contributors".
