is the red tail catfish compatible with oscar fish?

No. Red tails aren't compatible with any fish they can fit in their mouth. At at 5 feet long, there's not much he won't be able to fit. They may fit for a while, but one of two things will happen.

1) The cat will outgrow the oscar and the oscar becomes dinner. Even if it's 16" at the time.

2) Oscars are "dirty" fish - they poop a lot after eating. Red tail's can't tolerate poor water conditions and it will die. If you don't notice right away, the ammonia from the dead fish will probably kill the oscar, too.

And consider the tank size you're going to need. They don't make may tanks big enough to keep the cat in. You can put it in a 125, but it won't be able to move. A 300 gallon is the ABSOLUTE minimum for them! What are you going to do when it gets too big for you to keep in a 55? And a 90? Belive me, they will get this big. If you think they cost a lot, think about what you're going to have to feed it each week. And the number of water changes you're going to have to do to keep it alive from all you feed it.

he also has an enormous mouth when he gets to about 4ft, large enough to take a chunk out of an oscar.

Oscars are fairly violent in the direction of different fish given the prospect and by some ability from the sizes the pink tail can get to, I doubt its a solid blend. additionally in case you have become a pink tail cat fish, please please have a huge tank as maximum fish shops won't settle for it back if its outgrown your tank. they want a minimum of 800 gallons to my archives.
