Female ghost shrimp will carry her eggs under her tail--like between the little legs (called swimmerettes) under her tail. When they are new, they will be a drab green (olive green) color, be about the size of the tiny beads like the mulicolored sprinkles in cookies (but they'll be dull green, not party colored). There'll be anywhere from just a few to a couple dozen (older females will produce more eggs). She will move around as usual and will fan the eggs every 5 seconds or so with her little swimmerettes to keep them clean and fungus free and keep fresh water moving over them. After a couple of weeks, the eggs should begin to appear more khaki tan. When they are just about ready to hatch, if you have good eyesight, you should be able to see little black specks inside, which are the babies' eyes. Hatching should happen within a couple day--mom will either look for a safe place hidden away (like in a thicket of plants) or a high place and sit there while the eggs hatch. They won't all hatch at the same time but should all hatch within a few days of each other. Then the nauplii (larvae stage of ghosties) will hang in the water grabbing edibles and drifting around.

i agree with inundated, except that the ghost shrimp i got yesterday (first ones, so i'm NO expert, only observing) contained one female with eggs - looked like little black beads - and she dropped them today, still the really dark color. possibly the stress of coming over caused her to drop them early, but there was no turning colors to anything lighter before she dropped them. we realized they were eggs when we looked at pictures online. its pretty obvious, i think, when you look at pictures and compare the eggy shrimps to the rest of them.
