Boo! I wanna saltwater tank!!!!

Okay, here's my freshwater modification of my "dream" tank.

It starts with an in-ground swimming pool. Several pools, actually, with a slight gradient so it "waterfalls" from one pool to the next. Since I've got a million, let's make it about 25 x 40 ft, with irregular, rounded outline (hate square -it's unnatural!)

I'll put a "greenhouse" around it so I can control the air temps year round. The walls would extend out 15-20 feet out from the edges of the pool. Roof high enough for some tropical plants - date palms, cycads, tree ferns, etc. that would like the humidity. A little grass hut in a corner to hide the filtration system which would have to include several fluidized bed sand filters, a sump, a UV sterilizer, and an automatic water exchange so the would be a constant flow of new water so water changes wouldn't be necessary (typical commercial store set-up). I'd also use the "hut" for a heater/chiller unit and to store a huge gravel vac attached to an electric pump and nets/skimmers. When I vacuum the tank, I'll use the water I remove to water the plants - the nitrates make an excellent fertilizer.

Around the pool, between the trees and the pool's edge, there's be a mulch path to walk around, with big natural stones hollowed out for planters - with some nice tropicals like bird of paradise, ginger, bromeliads, etc. and a few lounge chairs - wicker or bamboo to blend into the tropical setting. In a corner near the hut would be a large rock waterfall - the return for the filtered water and a short stream leading to the first pool.

The pools would be a dark color, probably black, or dark brown or gray. Some submerged driftwood. Some rockwork around the edges. Rocks in some areas would make natural steps into the pools for access for underwater maintenence. Or even swimming - heck, I've got a huge, state-of-the-art filtration system, why not! (Memo to self - change plans for the hut to include a changing room, shower, and sauna.)

Back to the pool. Lots of plants! And some metal halide lighting over it for cloudy days. Dimmer switch if I want to swim - no sense in getting skin cancer & not being able to enjoy all this.

Now, for the fish. How about some South American / Amazon species. Koi and marbled angelfish. Lots of tetras for color. Or discus! A few plecostomous and/or corydoras. School of silver dollars. And some spawning black ghost knife fish.

Oh yeah. One small pond off by itself. About 100 gallons. I'll keep a flowerhorn as a centerpiece. Maybe I'll feed him chicken! (Just seeing if you read all this and are paying attention!)

You want to finance my dream tank?

So, do you have a million dollars and are looking for ideas to use it?

I am new in the hobby so I probably can't go into extreme depth and description of what I would want, but I can certainly give some general thoughts. First of all, I really love the aquariums that act as wall separators. I would probably do a couple of those (I live in an apartment, so I can't guess what rooms I would separate if I had a house). I would probably also have a pond, or several ponds, with interconnecting walkways. They would contain goldfish and koi. As for the aquariums inside, I would love to have one as a species tank for only tetras. I love the bright colors on most of the tetras (cardinal, neon, flame, etc.) I think it would make a very nice display to see them all swimming around in their little schools.

Another idea I wouldn't mind doing, is some of the set-up designs I saw in a book called Aquarium Style: Imaginative Ideas for Creating Dream Homes for Fish. I loved some of the designs in there. There was one that was called Zen Garden, which was so peaceful just to look at. I would be skeptical about using sand, though.

I would also love to have a tank with piranhas. I think it would be interesting.

That's just a couple of ideas. I think as I gain more insight and experience in the aquarium hobby, I might have more and more ideas come to fruition.

I wouldn't spend the whole $ on an aquarium set up alone. Surely I could have an awesome dream tank that's 50,000 gallons and several 20,000 gallon aquariums. I only need a few though to enjoy the hobby. Truly, I think that I would have to donate 75% into fish conservation as that is a life time knowing I did something you can't put a $ figure on.

Honestly I would get everything fish tank in my whole house. But it's too much to explain b/c I want everything aquarium. I've been fantasing about the day I can spend 1 million dollars on aquariums since I was 4. And it's still too painful to think about, b/c I will never have 1 million dollars.

if you're in the uk, go down to the local aquarium shop. ask about a complete set up (usually they give a big discount if you get it all at once). it'll probably cost you about £150 for a 24" tank and all the equipment, pebbles, lighting etc.

(i've seen shops that sell on ebay for about £50-75, they're brand new and come with all the things you need)

as for fish; i'd start with mollies (many varieties to choose from), guppies(as they adapt very easily and are also very easy to breed, get more females than males though), and neon tetras(they are small but if you get around 10 then they make the tank look less empty and are very easy to keep.

i'd also get a plec(these are the ones that suck all the gunk off your fish tank) as they help keep the tank clean. fighting fish are very beautifull but only get 1 male as they kill each other.

for about 30-35 fish you're looking to spend around £35-40 as most of the little ones only cost £1 each. X
