my friend's pet goldfish just died and since we burried it, he hasn't stopped crying. Now ,we may be friends but I don't think i can take one more: "And i remember the time when he did a back flip..." i keep telling him he can always get a new one but he's acting like they were freakin married.

I don't say this often but: Help?

Copperhead that is sound advice but I forgot to mention that the guy lives three houses away from me, so "letting him be" isn't an option.

you could get him like a male and a female so they could have babies like mine did and he could have more fish and he might get over it

You need to be sympathetic towards your friend. These things take time. You need to channel his emotions into something productive. I had a goldfish who died a few years ago. After my experience, I would say that whatever you do, do not tell him "you can always get a new one." That makes it worse. Just try to deal with the complaining and the "And i remember the time when he did a back flip..." . He needs time to get over it. That fish was a living creature that he loved and it cannot just be replaced with another one. It will ease up over time. Just try to deal with it for now, and help him get over it.

I'm 37 y/o and I had a fish for a 1 & 1/2 years. It died and everyone laughed at me b/c I was so sad and it was "just a fish". I say you go fish shoping and get another one. They are cheap. And any time that he starts talking about the dead one change the subject and continue doing that until he's talking about something else.

A dogs just a dog, a cats just a cat, a horses just a horse, a rabbits just a rabbit. Why cry over them?? ....Because they are your pets and to some people, family. This includes fish as well. Belive me, I've bawled my eyes out over fish before because you can grow a very close bond to them. Infact I've cried over my Betta jumping out of his tank...and surviving. I cried because I felt awful that he went from the counter to the floor. (NOT a short fall for a little Betta) My advice to you is to give your friend some time to calm his emotions as it sounds like he was very fond of his little goldfish. Just tell him it's ok and try to comfort him as much as possible even if the "I remember this and that" does get rather annoying. Don't tell him to go get another one and get over it (Even if it's in nicer words) because that just makes things worse. Belive it or not fish -do- have personalitys and they can be quite fun personalitys too and like people, no two fish are alike.

And for the record, I'm not 5, I do realise all things die and I do get pretty close to all my fish. (All 100+ of them.) It's like saying someones stupid for crying about their dog dying and telling them to get over it and buy a new one. You can replace the animal but you can't replace the hole in your heart of the one whos now gone.

Some people's pets are like a part of their family. It may seem silly to you, or that it was "just a fish", but it may be a big deal to your friend. Let him be for a while, if his mourning bothers you.

I'd take him out for dinner. Red Lobster or Long John Silver's, depending on your budget. Lots of people eat fish during Lent.

buy him another one. If this doesn't work I suggest seeing a therapist there could be a deeper problem than the fish.
