I would agree with Jeremy that it depends on the type of catfish. When I worked in the pet shop, we recommended Cory Cats as they are very adaptable to most water temperatures and conditions and remain quite small (I have rarely seen one over 1 inch in length.) so tank size is really not an issue. They are also a very active and entertaining fish and can be purchased in a variety of colors and patterns or even albinos at a fairly low price. It has been a few years ago but the price at that time was about $4 each at that time. They won't eliminate the need to clean your tank but they will help. You should also consider adding a Plecostamus, commonly sold as a Pleco, if you see a problem with algae developing. Goldfish are very messy fish and create a lot of tank pollution and frequent tank cleanings and algae removal seem to be a common problem. A good power filter is also a great addition to any goldfish tank.

It does depend on the type of of catfish. Peppered Corydoras for example are very hardy and small catfish that will easily thrive in 5-10 gallon tanks but should be kept in a group of at least 3. You can mix catfish with goldfish as long as the catfish you choose is hardy like the Corydora. Tropical sinking tablets should be provided to the catfish everyday before turning off the light of your aquarium and not just rely on food that falls to the bottom. Also, CATFISH WON'T EAT WASTE.

I had them in an unheated tank. A small tank with guppies in too. The catfish had no problem what so ever.
