Fish - March 2007

Hi I have 4 minnows, only had them for little over 2 weeks yet already I'm noticing big changes in 2 of them. One of them has started to develop a bump on the underside of her body & the other one has got a bump which is really quite large for a fish (especially considering the size of minnow!!!)

I know that the female is normally a little 'fatter' than the males so what I'm seeing could be that but at the same time I can't help but wonder because the one with the biggest tummy is staying on her own a lot in a certain place in the tank & when she does bother with the others she always goes back to that one spot again.

Anyone know anything much about minnows? Are their fry hard to keep going? Would they have to be fed live foods or can i crush flakes for them? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

I have seen some Arowanas swimming in a pond nearby my place and wants to try fishing for them.

Anyone can gimme some advice ...

* Top or Bottom fishing?
* Size of hooks?
* Baits - live baby frogs, prawns, crickets ...?? or lures?

I know to some, they are majestic and primitive creatures. I don't rare or even know how to eat them .. so this would be a Catch and Release & Photo taking adventure for me ..

Thanks

Where can I find a shop to buy them from? I've hunted all round, but online only, getting too hot to trawl petshops. Any suggestions?

i have a 80L tank with comunity fish. 7 in total. gold fish. lastnight one fish was chasing another and pushing it towards the plants. this was going on for over 4 hrs. I woke this morning to see if the fish were still at it, and i noticed they had settled but on the plans i could see 3 individual eggs. the chaser was a shabumpkin / tri tail. and the chasee was a silver goldfish.

What should i do next. remove the eggs, all the other fish? i dont really want to because last time i moved them, 2 died due to stress!
cheers

The light is turning off and on. Do most heaters turn off after they have reached the temperature, or did I get a defective heater? Thanks in advance

I've only had a betta before, which is the limit of my fish experience. We have room for a ten-gallon aquarium - fresh water. We're gone a lot for a couple of days at a time, so fish that would be fine with a day or so without feeding on occasion would be great. We'd like a few different types of fish that do well with a minimum of care, are readily available, and are compatible.

The goldfish's scales used to lay flat on it's body, but now it's so fat the scales are poking straight out like a hedgehogs spikes. The fish doesn't swim around much and likes to sit on the bottom of the tank. I can't imagine that it got so fat because of eating. It's coloring is good and it doesn't look like it is ready to die. Could it be pregnant? Sick? Plugged up? How do I tell if it's pregnant?

Thanks,

I have a mixture of platies & mollies in a 20 gallon tall tank.It is like 10 of them with my blue/green female betta.So I decided 3 weeks ago to breed her with Red my solid red & blue tip betta!I conditioned them with live brine shrimp & freeze dried bloodworms!Her egg spot is showing but stomach isn't "big" but it is not small!So I decided to put him in my NET BREEDER inside the tank.So she was showing stress marks but was following him in the net breeder.Well today I put her in the net breeder to get him to blow a bigger bubblenest becuz he only had like 30 bubbles under the piece of stryofoam under there.Well he was instead not blowing more instead inviting her to the nest by flaring at her then running back under the bubbles so she was just sitting there with the vertical stripes like she was ready to mate & went into the head down tail up position but the male got upset with her not coming to the nest I guess and rush her & went back under the nest.What should I do know?

I have a beta in a one gallon i added water waited 24 hours - my beta is now almost one he is happy, healthy and as crazy as ever. Only thing i do is change the water every 7-10 days.

Im worried I just got a 15 gallon tanks i added gravel that was used in a tank previouslly as well as some used gravel fresh from an aged tank. I also fed the tank for a week and a half and left the heat up abouve 80 with the lights on. After about 10 days I added 2 Neon tetras (which was just 3 days ago). They seem happy they swom around in a pair all day zippin through the little tunnel and around the plants. I feed them only a couple flakes and figered they will produce only a little amonia - do you think they could be in danger? They seem content?

I bought a fish tank a few months ago, it also came with crushed coral sand.
I put my tetras in the tank and began thinking about adding the sand to the tank.

I know that this type of sand increases pH, but still not sure if it would be okay to put with tetras...

It would help if you had some information on this subject...

Thanks

She is breathing heavily and her back is bent in half with her tail hanging down! She keeps resting on plants/bottom and then will straighten out and swim normally. The male is constantly with her, looks like he's kissing her! What's up?
