I bought a fish tank a few months ago, it also came with crushed coral sand.
I put my tetras in the tank and began thinking about adding the sand to the tank.

I know that this type of sand increases pH, but still not sure if it would be okay to put with tetras...

It would help if you had some information on this subject...

Thanks

It does increase the pH and hardness, you are exactly right. Tetras prefer and do better with softer, lower pH water so I would really recommend against using this substrate for tetras. It would be good for african cichlids, but a really poor choice for tetras, grab a few bags of yor favorite color gravel instead. You and your tetras will be much happier in the long run.

crushed coral is usually used for cichlids who live in africa where the pH is greater than 7. Its hard to tell if it will affect your tetras because i don't know what type of tetras you have. A good way to figure out if they are OK is to look at your tetras dedicated webpages online to determine the pH for their living conditions. Most i know do better in acidic conditions (like neon and cardinal tetras).
