I have a 50 gallon tank with 8 african cichlids. They are all constantly hiding, alot of times fighting over the same corner. They used to swim around but now they are just scared. When you walk by the aquarium, if they are out, they swim to hide as fast as they can. I am not having any water issues that I know of, they appear perfectly healthy and eat well. Any ideas? There is one who appears dominant over all the others, but they are hiding in his corner, so I'm not sure what's up.

I have never really had the benefits explained to me. What kind of fish need them and what kind don't? I don't use it in my tanks even though people say it's best because I'm not very educated on it. I know that I can't use it in my tank with my loach because I know that salt is bad for them. What else can you tell me?

I have a sick fish and want to make sure everything is cleaned before I put it back in the tank (Statue, plastic plant, gravel).

What should I do/use to completely clean this stuff and keep it fish-friendly so I don't use something that will kill my fish when I put it back in the tank?

I'm thinking about getting driftwood for my 55 gal tank. The ph is way too high, (almost 1.0 too high!) and I've heard driftwood is a very good way to lower it. I need to know, what kind of driftwood would be best? What kind will sink? I've seen cypress, among many other kinds on ebay. How big of a piece should I get in order to help the ph?

Also, most of what I've seen online are "all natural" and I'm not sure what I'm going to have to do to it once I get it home. If I boil it, will it kill the tannins that I need to lower my ph, along with the parasites?

Any other info that I should know about driftwood would also be greatly appriciated.
Thank you in advance for your answers.

Hello- I keep reading that Black Molly fish due 'best' with salt. I have several other community fish and I dont know how salt would affect them:

20 gallon tank
-1 black molly
-1 clown loach
-4 neon tetra
-2 serpae tetra
-1 angelfish

It always says that Mollys do 'best ' with salt, but it is not necessarily detrimental to thier survival? i have also read in places that they dont really need salt ? Does anyone have any personal experience ?

Can the Molly live a normally happy life with unsalted water ?

Thanks !

I just got him spur of the moment kind of a deal and talked to the guy at the pet store about it about how much to feed him what I need for the water and everything. But I think I was misled about how many times to feed him. Can anyone offer me some advice about this? And do they like to be alone, in smaller aquariums?

Today is the day I am supposed to wash off my filter sponge and replace the carbon. Do I need to take out my fish and cycle it or something or do I just replace the stuff and plug it back in with fish still inside?

I don't know what kind of plant it is, so here's a pic of it: http://i13.tinypic.com/2q09ftz.jpg

I bought this thing already grown from the same place I got the fish. It was a normal size when I got it ... It's only been a month and a half and now it's twice it's original size! It's so tall it's now growing across the top of my aquarium.

Can I prune it down? How? And how long after I prune it will the leaves grow back?

im starting a 29 gallon goldfish tank and i was wondering how big will 2 fantails get? or how big will two comets get?
also with the fantails ive had black moors before and i really like them, but the ones ive had have been really agressive and even killed and made other fantails starve todeath. that was in a much smaller tank though. will one black moor terrorize another fantail in a 29 gallon?

Thanks

i bought some fish two weeks ago off the internet!
ive had my tank set up for 5weeks.
my fish have ick/ich.
i know for a fact it isnt because of poor water conditions!!!
they were most likely sent to me with ick/ich.
my water is crystal clean, and ive done regular water changes!!!
anyway, ive been treating them for ick/ich with some treatment i bought. i didnt really notice a change, untill today! ive treated them 3times now as the intructions state i should do it every other day! my mollies and platys were acting strange and had the white spots over them, but today there acting normal and dont seem to have as many white spots on them, my 2 clown loaches had it the worst, they were covered in it, one of them also had a moss type fungus on him but he died yday. i cant find him tho! but my other clown loach still seems to have the same amount of white spots on him, do you think this treatment im useing will cure him? or is he on hes way out?

I cleaned his bowl using tap water that i always use then i put a chlorine remover in it. This time he got sick and started laying on the bottom of the bowl and not eating. I then went and bought bottled water and put him in that adding aquarium salt as directed. He still is not eating and that was 8 hrs ago. If he does swim he acts very lethargic, but then slowly goes back to the bottom. He also occasionally attacks the top of the water then floats back to the bottom. He has no rapid gill movement or any signs of parasites. I have had him for 8 months and nothing has ever been wrong. Please help....

and i just wanted to know if anybody knows of a good medication to get rid of the ick/ich?

i would like an all in one, that treats diseases, plus ammonia and nitrites. so if you could tell me the name of it then i'd be really thankful.

I just changed the water yesterday and rinsed my filter cartridge and put a bag of ChemPure product, which contains activated carbon and other ingredients, into filter canister. When I got up this morning, I found the entire tank water get grayish. It seems the carbon was dissolved into water or the tiny particles were rinsed off the carbon. Do I need to replace the water again or I can wait for it to clear up later.

We have had a ten gallon aquarium for about three months now and am having a problem keeping the water clean and the water levels where they are supposed to be. It only has four fish in it...2 fantails, a tetra and a yet small algea eater that sticks to the sides and bottom of the tank. I suspect I am may be overfeeding or using the wrong kind of food but the water is cloudy most of the time. Can the filter cartridges be cleaned off and reused or do I have to buy new ones all the time. Right now we are cleaning it off about every other day as it gets full of greenish brown slime. We use reverse osmosis water in the tank as our tap water is unsafe. What do I do? Also, the little male tetra acts weird. Constantly darting from one end of the tank and back to the other...all day...every day. Has killed two female tetras by chasing. Any idea as to what's going on?

Ok heres what happened. I kept a 1 inch goldfish in a 1.5 gallon plastic aquarium with a small filter. I fed it a little every day and it wasn`t fat but it definitly wasn`t starving. There were no other fish and it was a bare bottomed tank. I ran the filter with just a pleco for a month before hand(I moved him and thats why I got this goldfish). I cleaned his tank with a scraper after 2 months and put in 2/3 new water that I used water conditioner on. 1/2 an hour after I put him back in he died.
Anyone have any idea why?

I have a 65 litre tank that has been set up for about 3 months and has 1 catfish, 6 tetra, 6 danio, 6 platies, 4 cyclids and 3 clown loaches in it and 1 swordtail.

Over the weekend the 6 tetra, 1 swordtail and 3 clown loaces died - although the only sympton prior to death was swimming a lot near the bottom of the tank.

I have checked the water and the nitrate is at the highest level (dark red) but our tap water is naturaully high and i do regular small water changes. - Would this cause them all to die suddenly?

I have my tank light on for about 12 hours of the day - as recommend in our local fish shop - could this also be a factor

The danios appear fine at the moment but the platies are now spending a lot of time at the bottom of the tank - please help as I dont want anymore to die.

I have a small tank dedicated to my tropical fish, its only about 1ft square. My guppies have had babies and i need more room. I have a tank with goldfish in, this tank is 4ft long 2ft high and 1ft wide. There are 9 regular gold fish and 3 shubunkins. Ive been considering buying a heater to put in the bigger tank and moving the tropicals across. Willl the gold fish be ok in a warmer tank (my tropical is currently set at 26) and will they mix ok with my tropicals. I have got Mollies, platies, guppies, gouramis, red tail shark and an assortment of tetra's.
