There are other fish not just algae eaters that would just jump out of tanks. There are many reasons for this: sees food at or above the surface, being chased, scared, looking for hiding places, etc. I had a betta who jumped out of his tank like three times for unknown reasons but still lived.

Most fish can and will jump out of a tank. My Chinese Algae Eater chases the other fish occasionally and I have seen him shoot to the surface so fast after one he comes out of the water. Get a lid that covers the whole tank.

All good answers so far....BUT......I would make sure your water is ok....I"ve known fish to jump out of the water if the ammonia or nitrites spike..or the ph changes quickly....so.....just to be on the safe side...you should check your water!!! =)
