I need some input on saltwater or fresh water tank?I have owned Oscars, african cichlids, neons, bettas but never saltwater. I have heard they are very expensive?Just want to get some opinions of those who have had either or both

I currently have 6 comets that I know will last the winter and several guppies that I don't think will make it through the winter.
I was thinking of adding some small gold fish (fan tails) but I am unsure if now is a good time because they would have to compete with the 6 comets (4-7inches [10 - 18 cm]) and the fan tails would be 1.5-2.5 inches [4-6cm]
Pond is about 8 foot in diameter 1.5 - 2 feet deep.

Could I safely add the fan tails.

What other fish could I add, preferably something with color.

What kind of scavager could I add and or do I need one.

What can I do to protect the fish from predators like herons or racoons. A blue heron wiped out all the fish early this year and I don't want to feed the bird koi which are $$ comets look almost as good for a fraction of the cost.

What kind of fish like guppies can live through the winter?

If I pull out a few of the guppies to save for next summer how small a tank can I get by with for half a dozen guppies (4 Male 2Female min)

When I bought my latest aquarium, it came with two filters. A regular hang over the top type and an undergravel one. Well, the undergravel was all taken apart and came with no instructions. I have never set up one and decided to just forget it.

What should I do with it? Toss it? Sell it? I don't even know if all the pieces are with it. Hate to accidently screw someone over.

Or, are there possible instructions online?

What would you do?

I was browsing the paper earlier and spotted a 55g aquarium with heater, filter, and hood for 70$. I don't have the space for one right now but oh that is a steal (if everything is ok and not broken somehow)!

I'm going to get a storage shed here soon and might have the room in that. It will be there for a number of years until I get a bigger place.

My question posed to you:

If you saw the add and were getting a storage...would you buy the aquarium and store it or not because of fear of it somehow being broken?

i need help with hole in head...i have a 75 gallon with 3 fish...2 tiger oscars...one being albino, and a plecostemus. the albino has a pit by his nostril, and i am thinking it is hole in head...it is very small..about the size of his nostril. i want to take care of the problem asap. what kinda food could i use? i don't want to buy a bunch of medication because you have to change your water all the time and remove carbon. also...i read dog food is really high in protien and my fish would probably grow faster from it. do you think that would work? right now i feed cichlid sticks, and rosie reds every other week (about 20 of them for both). i have some beef heart, but that is expensive

When I bought my betta which was 3 weeks ago, I noticed his attractive colour.. a yellowish head, blue and purple tail with red tips. But as I have been reading I have learned that betta's fin colours dull after a period of time. I took a better close at him and noticed that by looking at him from the side his blue belly and sides are slightly dulling and don't look as blue as his tail. They look.. somewhat.. faded. Is this just his colour or is his colour fading..? What can I do?

My husband and I have had a 30 gal fresh fish tank for over five years and we NEVER had so much trouble with algae untill we moved a year ago and went from "city water" to a "private well". We have tried everything-from frequent water changes, buying new gravel and even a bio- wheel. We have tried every product our fish store recommended.Nothing seems to help!!!!!!We have gone from water changes every three months using a product called 'Easy Balance' ( which used to work great!) -to every week-partial or complete-it doesn't matter. Our fish seem to be thriving though and don't seem to mind-but WE are desperate and are ready to give up! Is there something missing in well water that makes it less ideal for aquariums? I know it has not been treated with any chemicals . Any help or advise would be appreciated.
Thanks.

I'm considering buying a dalmatian molly fish. I'm a dog lover at heart, so I thought it would be fun to place a mini doghouse into the tank as decor and as a place for my fish to hide, should it feel the need to do so. I found a wooden dog house made for hamsters at my local Petsmart and I'm considering using that. If I do, I would like to paint it before putting it in the water. What kind of paint would you suggest to use? I don't want to poison the poor thing.

do zoos and places accept them? just wondering. I have 3 pacus, and they get to about 3 feet long. that doesnt bother me, but if they arent happy in a confided tank, id prefer them going to a zoo or fish aquarium that would accept them, because there would be more room for them. are there other places that would accept such a large fish?
im not worried about not being able to take care of them. yes i knew about this before i bought them, but i want them to be happy if they get that large. they are just babies now.
I dont want to hear about how irresponsible im am, blah blah, i love my fish, thats why im asking. if they arent happy being in a limited tank, then i would prefer them to live out their life happy.
Thank you.
