There are Gold Nugget Pleco. They are pretty expensive. $50 seems a bit excessive, but not complete out of question. They also aren't the most hardy of fish from what I've heard. He should be sure to inquire about their policy if the fish dies in the 1st week or to.

Just be glad it's not a Zebra Pleco. They run in the 100's of dollars.

I have never heard of a gold nugget algae eater, however, there is a plecostomus called a gold nugget. The gold nugget plecostomus is a hard to find fish. I can't believe Petsmart has one. They are no more hard to take care of than any other pleco. They are very sensitive to pH changes though.

You need to test your aquarium water at home and ask the Petsmart people to test the water they are keeping it in. There should be no more than .5 difference or the fish could go into pH shock which is usually fatal in about 3-5 days. Sometimes longer if the fish is large and in good health to begin with.

pH shock is one of the major killers of new fish in home aquariums.

Go to "plecofanatics.com" and do a search for it. There will be a lot of info there. Also, go to "Aquabid.com" and check out the prices that people are asking and buying them for. Maybe you can make a deal with the Petsmart people if it has been there for quite a while. They like to see their fish get sold quickly.
