I was browsing the paper earlier and spotted a 55g aquarium with heater, filter, and hood for 70$. I don't have the space for one right now but oh that is a steal (if everything is ok and not broken somehow)!

I'm going to get a storage shed here soon and might have the room in that. It will be there for a number of years until I get a bigger place.

My question posed to you:

If you saw the add and were getting a storage...would you buy the aquarium and store it or not because of fear of it somehow being broken?

Just a note:

I know one day I will get a bigger place as I am only in the 1 room studio while in college. Once I'm out of college, I'll move to a place that has a living room! I also won't be sharing my place with 3 other people.

At my age I have stopped saving stuff up for maybe when... On a more practicle note still... you want a tank that is brand new and crystal clear. If there are not lime deposits and scratches on it now than it will almost certainly get scratches on it being moved in and out of storage. Save up your money with the time you would have had it in storage and buy yourself a brand new tank. Buy it mail order along with all the filtration stuff and you will save oodles of money. Dr Foster is a good outfit. Good luck and save and treat yourself. I have raised fish for a long time and old tanks and hoods are just that... old. And they look old. Other equipment may become obsolete (e.g. underground filters).

I wouldn't I did the same thing I had a great deal on a 55 gal and bought it, then thought about it and realized that if I was renting a landlord may not want that big of a tank in case it breaks and if I was owning I didn't want to have to deal with it if it broke so I had to sell it and I could'nt get what I paid for it because very few people want big tanks there hard to maintain and take up alot of room, if it was meant to be you would have already had a bigger place and that wound'nt be a problem for you

I would not. That's how the packrat in each of us is born. The whole point to a happy life is to declutter.

If you're really that concerned about losing a deal like that or inflation, take the $70 and put it in a certificate of deposit to roll over until you get your bigger place. The interest earned would make up for the inflation between now and then.

that is a good price for that tank. I would buy it. I had just bought a 54gal Hagen for 250. this was with fish live plants stand and all of the stuff. If you store it properly you should have no worries about breaking the tank.

i wouldn't buy it now, aquariums don't like being dry, the sealant
cracks and they are buggers to re-seal, then you also run the risk of breaking it
used aquariums are always for sale and they are always
one dollar a gallon for used and the price hasn't changed
for 20 years just wait till you are ready, why pay rent
on something you cant use?
