Try a dwarf frog. It will enjoy the same food as the Betta and won't use up the oxygen.

A tank that size is only large enough for one fish, and a small one at that. Bettas are not as easy as most people think and the pet stores lead you to believe. Never put two males together. A male and a female should only be placed together for a short breeding time, and that is very complicated in itself. Bettas are not really made for swimming and can easily get caught in the intake of a filter or power filter and do not have the swimming ability to get away from it, and almost always die. Also they are not strong enough to handle strong current in aquariums, like from the out flow of the filter/power filter. Another misconception is that they are to be kept in those tiny little bowls or betta containers that the shops sell. They should be in a one gallon bowl at the least, a two gallon is better. If in a one gallon size is selected, water changes a couple times a week is necessary. As for what kind of fish they can be put with; they can be fin nippers and damage any other kind of fish, also they can be picked on themsleves by other fish and killed. I have seen people put them in with platties, danios, etc. and have mixed results. I have seen the bettas kill the other fish, I have seen bettas themselves killed or badly torn up by the other fish and then have seen them do ok. But not very often do they do ok. The life span for bettas (in perfect living conditions is 3-5 years). I would suggest just keeping your betta by himself and do water changes and feed a good quality betta food. And never, never, NEVER put two males together, and also don't put a female in with one.

you cannot put anything else in there, not because the betta might hurt it but other fish need filteration.you could probably put a mystery snail or a apple snail.i keep alot of bettas and know what im doing, you shouldnt even if your betta is female put another female in,my females fight each other like the males do.so unless you want a snail(wich come in different colors like yellow)you cant put anything in the tank.

you can put some live pants in there with small pebbles because bettas like plants.if your betta is a female then buy another female betta.if you really want another fish buy a guppy and feed both of it flakes.but if you buy a guppy try not to pick one that has a big fancy tail or else your betta will get jealous.

Bettas aren't very social. Males fight males and females. But it might be ok to buy a separate tank and put them next to each other so one fish can see the other. See how they react and if it's good then you can probably put them together.

Maybe a rock. Or a little deep sea diver. Other than that, the betta will fight with it.

If you have a five gallon tank or more than you can put goldfish or other small fish in with it. but if it's smaller than five gallons then put it in there alone.
