I have had the best luck with the aggressive african cichlids, however DO NOT mix them w/ community fish or south american cichlids...unless you just wanted to feed them some expensive food. I have 3 tanks...a 10 gallon a 29 gallon and a 55 gallon, and I have the most fun w/ our African tank and the lowest mortality rate....only one, but he got stuck in a rock--so it was his own fault. They always come up to you when you look at them...not a shy at all...and the best part is that they often have babies, so you get some free fish out of the deal! The babies are "born" (actually the mama keeps the fertilized egg in the mouth for about a month or so and then spits out a little "mini me") well developed and with a few little hiding places they usually are able to survive.
Make sure to setup your tank properly w/ filters, a heater, a thermometer, gravel vacuum and decholorinating solution. Your local fish shop would be glad to help you understand good fish combos and make sure you have the proper equipment.
Also, be sure to add only a few fish at a time to allow the water to stabilize...too many new fish at once can cause a spike in ammonia or nitrates ( from their wastes) which are lethal to fish.
Do a 15-20% water change(don't forget dechlorinator!) twice a week initially and then weekly once the tank stabilizes...which will be a few months or so. Make sure to change the filter every month and don't feed the fish old food...fish food can lose it's nutritional value after being opened...throw old stuff out every 3-6 months.
Hmmm....I think that covers all the mistakes I made when I was new at fish keeping...good luck and have fun!

first, what size of tank do you have, salt or fresh, and live plants or fake. If you have a new tank Zebra Danios, Blue Danios, (1) male betta and Cory Cats would be ideal. We have had ours since the beginning (3 months).

Try getting a pleco...and make sure that you are taking good care of the aquarium - not just the fish. Here's a great website you can use that will help you keep your fish alive longer...

Gold fish - all fish need care. You have to feed them, clean out their tanks, make sure the water is aerated, don't put carnivore fish with ordinary fish......
