What are you asking?

Why do my aquarium fish die?
Why did my Goldfish die?
Why did my Guppies die?
Why do fish in the sea die?
Why do freshwater fish die?
Why do fish in my pond die?
Or just, why do fish die in general?

Here's an answer that covers them all:
Every living thing dies at one time or another.

Yes, food or the lack thereof (starvation ) can cause fish to die.

Your question is wide open to interpretation and it's really not
fair of you to not give more of an explaination or clarification.

Yes, food can be a reason---but there are a lot of reasons fish can die. Some food related causes:

Overfeeding/Underfeeding- you should feed your fish 2x a day and only give as much as they are able to completely consume in 3 min.

Old/nutritionally degraded food- you should throw out food about 6 months after being opened...buy smaller if necessary.

Parasites/Diseases- if you feed your fish "feeders" they can carry bad things which could be passed on to your fish. Don't dump the water from the bag into the tank...net the fish as to minimize chances of transmission.

It's also a good idea to give your fish a varied diet to ensure adequate intake of different nutrients.

(1) If the quantity of chlorophyll ‘a’ in the water is high like 60 mg per litre and above against 20 mg per litre in clear waters,
then the fishes will die
(2) If the pH level of the water is highly alkaline like 8 and above
then also it affects the fishes there
(3) If organic matter entering the lake through storm water drains, both in dissolved and particulate form, must have been sufficient for death of fishes.
(4) If the lake or ponds are in hypereutrophic condition (severe nuisance algal blooms), then fishes find them difficult to remain
(5)Garbage disposals in the catchment area and the shallowness of the lake (less than 3.5 m depth) could be one of the reason for the hypereutrophic conditon
(6) Fishes like shrimp, "bele" and "chewa" , which stay at the bottom of the river, do not get required oxygen due to pollution and are also infected with toxic wastes. The toxic wastes prevent the fishes from getting oxygen at the riverbed.

On 2nd August, 2006
an estimated 3 million dead tilapia choked off Varner Harbor at the Salton Sea State Recreation Area and countless more dead fish drifted on open water in the wake of a "green tide" that likely sapped oxygen from much of the troubled lake.

The reasons are many but the biggest killers of aquarium fish by far are poor water quality and stress. Google or Yahoo search "tropical fish care". Make a choice from the search list and learn all you can about setting up a healthy aquarium from the beginning. Also wetwebmedia.com has an excellent forum about aquarium issues. Hope this helps.

There are many reasons for fish death in aquariums/tanks. Not the least of which is overfeeding, but also - the Nitrogen cycle (if it wasn't fully cycled when the fish first went in).

Then there are the common diseases which fish can either already have when you bought them (like Ich/Velvet/Septicemia/etc...).

To much food. Dirty water, dirty hands stuck in the water. Not enough food. Cat paws in the water. Chlorine in the water (from the tap) Age are just a few of the reasons.
