As of 2005 piranha sales and possession are illegal in the following states:

Maine
New York
Massachusetts
Virginia
Kentucky
North Carolina
South Carolina
Georgia
Florida
Alabama
Mississippi
Arkansas
Louisiana
Oklahoma
Texas
New Mexico
Colorado
Utah
Arizona
Washington
Nevada
California
Hawaii

This may be a partial list because there were other states I thought that might be illegal but couldn't find the info. Call your local Dept. of wildlife & fisheries to find out more. Some states require a permit.

Take a look at the links I provided for you.

The first one shows a map of the US and which states it is illegal or legal to have a piranha as a pet.

The second link is a FAQ about piranha keeping such as what size tank you need, what to feed them, how to care for them, etc.

I have a friend who owns two red-bellies in a 55g tank. They're pretty cool and I fed them for two weeks. Very social fish.

As far as where to buy them, if after you know you can give them a proper home, there are several websites online that sell them. I think I've already done enough searching for you though.

Piranhas are very hard fish to keep. They need a group of six or more, in a 300 gallon tank minimum. They eat live foods... They just don't make good pets.

You can buy Piranhas online or in pet stores.
Here is one site to browse for prices (online store based in NJ, USA):

You should first learn about their care. Here's a good book to read:

Here are the site wherein you could browse some piranhas:

But be careful, first you should know where piranhas are legal or illegal and specially you should know how to take care it.

Piranha are carnivores and in the wild they only eat live food. You should do some research before you get them. They are not easy to take care of, but they are very cool fish. It will probably cost you about $2-5 a week to feed one.

They are actually in the tetra family which makes them a schooling fish. However, they sometimes gang up and eat the weakest fish in the school... not unlike our own schools.
