I Just bought my first home and I need some help. I have owned fresh water tanks before.Only 10 gallon tanks. I want to buy a new tank for my living room.I do not have kids, its just me and my wife. I need some input on saltwater or fresh water tank?I have owned Oscars, african cichlids, neons, bettas but never saltwater. I have heard they are very expensive?Just want to get some opinions of those who have had either or both

I have owned both and depending on your experence I would say go freshwater. Saltwater fish tend to be more expensive and more sensitive to the water chemistry. African cichlids are an excellent choice for freshwater tanks, but be careful on the type as they tend to be more aggressive than other tropical fish and usually do not do well in community tanks.

In general freshwater tanks have larger margins of error than marine tanks. Marine tanks are usually less stocked than fresh water tanks (1-3 fish max in a 10gal marine tank, depending on species). Generally, marine fish cannot tolerate ammonia, nitrite and nitrate as many fresh water fish can.

With salt water aquariums larger tanks are more stable and easier to maintain than smaller ones. Additionally, small tanks like a 10-gal are prone to larger flucuations of water parameters, salinity, temperature, etc, than larger tanks, and large flucuations can result in large losses.

Small marine tanks can be done, however, just be aware that they're more challenging than say a 55-gal marine set up.

salt water tanks R expensive but lots of ppl say its worth it. I would stick to freshwater, tho. It's also a good idea to try a brackish water(freshwater mixed with a little salt) tank. Brakish water fish include monos, puffers and scats. good luck.
