Each year at this time, she finds a patch of grass and just lays down and carefully pulls the roots up and eats them and then puts the grass tuft back in place. I have tried giving her dog vitamins thinking she was lacking something but they didn't do anything. She also starts eating any paper she can find.

I have never seen a dog do this before. She is a 7 year old German Shepherd and in great health with the exception of occasional grand mal seizures. I had her checked for the seizures and the vet said she will have them her whole life and not to worry unless they get more frequent.

The vet I go to doesn't know why she eats the roots. Best guess is that she is finding some nutrient there she is lacking and told me if I brought a sample of the root, he could have it tested to see what it contains for about 600 bucks.

I'm hoping someone here knows why she does this and what she is lacking if she is lacking.

When I have people over my house my dog will compusively lick them. She doesn't do it to me or my husband, but when people come over I can't get her to stop and have to lock her in a room until they leave. Anyone have something similiar happen? How can I train her to stop?

My dog,Bholoo, a male Germen Shepherd of five years has been approaching me every night for biscuits. For the last ten nights I have noted that he comes to me precisely at 9.16 p.m.I cannot imagine that he is able to read the clock on the wall. I infer that dogs too have body clocks like humans.I will like to learn experiences of other owners of pets like dog, cat or birds.etc.in this aspect of animal/birds behavior.

A Pitbull or a Husky, I mean which is stronger in everything? and lets say that you put the two of them to fight each other, who would have the advantage and win the fight? I am not trying to do anything, its just that me and my friend got into an argument about which is stronger, and I thought I should ask here. BTW, another question I have is which would have a better chance to turn on you to attack you between these two?

Does anyone know of a dog breed good for mild asthmatic? I have looked on various websites and just dont like the look of a poodle/labradoodle etc etc. or anything to that effect.

The dog i would love to get looks wise, would be a black lab but my mate has one and i cant go anywhere near it!! Without my eyes watering and feeling the allergic effects.
Is there anything similar looking to a lab in the non molt hypoallergenic dog world??

Cheers in advance everyone.

I recently became involved with a wonderful woman who happens to own a non-declawed cat. I took my 5 year old Basset hound mix to her house last night for the first time and everything was fine for the first 15 minutes then I think it finally registered in my dog's mind that there was a cat there. She made a threatening move for the fearful feline and wound up with a claw swat to the snout.

This is potentially a big problem! I love my dog & my girlfriend loves her cat. I definitely feel it was my dog that was the aggressor in this case and I feel bad because of it. What can I do to promote racial harmony between them? I don't want out pets to be a roadblock in out relationship. HELP!!!

i have a 2 year old male newfoundland dog who is in good health and seems very satisfied and easygoing. But sometimes on weekdays, everyone goes to work or school, and the newfoundland is left alone in the house for several hours on his own. Lots of food and water is provided to him, along with some toys.

But some neighbors complain that there is lots of loud afternoon barking coming from my newfie and he doesn't seem to stop. One of my neighbor threatened that he will call animal control, if next time my dog barks continuously, in the day.

How to make sure the newfie doesn't bark when he's left alone in house?

he kind of becomes destructive and chews things too, when alone.

should i get second dog to keep him company?

He is a 14 year old Beagle/Collie cross. We are trying to treat him with oral tablets for a stomach bug. No matter what I mix his tablets with, my dog can always detect the flavour and will not eat it! I have tried every strong flavoured food I can think of with no result. I have also tried hand feeding him with only limited success. Unfortunately he has never "wolfed" his food so it seems impossible to hide it away without him noticing. Only idea I have left is trying to find a way to hold his nose as I know this works for humans. Has anyone had a similar problem and found a solution?

my 4 dogs normally get a run every day at my local riding stables after all the horses have gone back on the polo field for approx an hour. if i don't go down to see the horses i take them for a 30-45 minute walk but today it's been raining all day so they haven't had the chance to go outside unless for a toilet break. they have been playing with toys, each other and got some special treats. i played ball with them as good as i could in the flat but i don't know if that's enough. what do you think? what do you do with your dogs on a rainy day?

My lhasa (vets says 6 yrs old; rescued him 4 yrs ago) had bloodwork & showed slightly elevated WBC. All else ok per vet. Hes usually active & playful, but sometimes suspect he doesn't feel well. Have blamed that on allergies; sneezes a lot & nose runs of clear water. Old allergy test showed some + to grasses. Never cough or fever. On 5mg zyrtec qd for allergy relief. Has VERY bulgey eyes that run constantly; perhaps contributing to nose drip.
Has occassional limp up front. Vet says prob arthritis given poor conformation. He's on cosequin & Carprofen 12.5 mg qd. Vet does anal glands every 6 wks. He's well groomed & clean. Skin and coat healthy but skin often pink in color.

Ears healthy. Potty normal (some mucousy stools). Food & water intake normal. Teeth & gums healthy. Neg for hot spots & dry eye. Excercise daily. Canidae food.

1. Should I be concerned about the WBC & what should I do? Vet says to watch him closely!
2. Should I have front legs imaged?

$ no issue

my friend told me that her dog's has been limping on his right front paw for a few days, she checked his paw and leg and could'nt feel any broken bones or see any cuts or blood and she said it is not swollen, any idea's why he is limping? She said if he is still limping after a few more days she is going to bring him in to the vets to get checked, he is a big dog, a malamute/wolf mix and is indoor/outdoor.

I just got a chihuahua puppy three days ago. I noticed her panting early and asked the vet today, he said as long as she's eating good and her temperatures okay, then she's fine. I have checked her for worms also.

My puppy is 16 weeks old and she sleeps A LOT. She'll sleep perfectly fine, then sometimes start to breath faster and louder, then she'll start to pant. She doesn't seem in pain at all, but I wake her anyway, she looks normal, but still pants for a while. I get scared so I give her water everytime after I wake her up and she usually drinks.

She's eating perfectly fine but she has diarreah right now, but that's because I didn't have enough of her old food to wean her properly. I'm feeding her chicken soup for puppys kibbles, but today I tried giving her some rice and chicken mixed with the kibbles. Let me know if there's any other way I can settle her stomach.

Some information on my lovely doggie...

breed-German shepherd/austrailian healer
age-3 years old
gender-male
fur type-short hair
tail lengs-stubb
other-When he was 1 he was hit by a car and had to have surgerie on his back leg. He has fully recovered now but for the most part, he still doesn't walk on that leg. He is able to run at a incredible 40mph though. I hope his leg won't effect his training...?

I really want to train him, but I don't know what sport he would do best in. Please tell me or let me know how I can find out.

My dog was attacked by a pit bull. IT would not let go of him for nothing(keep in mind this is a little dog). For ten minutes this pit had a hold of my dogs neck, and swinging him around like a rag doll..we knew he was dead. My husband hit the pit over the head five times with a sledge hammer, and it did not budge, then finally threw water on them, and it let go, they left to haul the pit off. I looked outside to see if I could find my dog, he was laying there, and surprisingly he was breathing, but not moving. My husband got home about 15 mins later, and said if he's alive it wont be long til he dies. By this time my dog was up moving around, but the blood was pouring from his neck. We got him immediate help once we realized he was up and getting around quite well. We got him on antibiotics, and pain medicine, put peroxide on his wounds several times daily. This was over a month ago, and my dog is now alive and kick'n it well!!!! We now call him our miracle dog!!!

Last year, i brought 3 pups -- newfoundland, saint bernard and english mastiff. All 3 of them have now grown into giant dogs and i am badly overwhelmed taking care and controling them. I have too much work and school stress already.

My girlfriend also doesn't seem to care for them properly, because she fears their size and feels they may attack her

When i take all 3 for walk, i have very hard time controlling their leashes. All 3 of them pull me together, and i'm myself dragged instead of controlling them. I feel several hundreds of pounds of pressure pulling me at once. I have back pain, because of all the strength i use to barely control their leashes.
I can't take them 1 by 1 for walk, because i don't have much time so i take all 3 together.

They are becoming destructive and noisy too. In the night they bark a lot, and disrupt my sleep. Their costs are goin higher to

I was not aware that they will grow so incredibly large, when i brought them as pups.

How to handle them?
