Hi- i do professional breed selection counseling and breeder referral for some veterinary practices- i will tell you that there is no actual hypoallergenic dog- most people who are allergic to dogs are allergic to dog saliva found on the hair (believe it or not- it is true) so non-shedding breeds are popular as they lose less of the hair with saliva on it than shedding breeds- the biggest caution i will give you is not to buy a "designer dog" - as they are actually overpriced mutts bred by people trying to make a buck- i suggest going to a dog show in your area- talk to breeders of breeds that you like- see if their dogs cause flare up- if you find one that doesn't- they would be a good reference for a breeder referral too! initial suggestions: breeds who shed and drool less- poodles, short haired breeds appropriate for your lifestyle needs, most of the terriers(that don't shed of drool)- that is actually a lot of dogs to choose from- get on the AKC website at AKC.org and look up breeds by group- find some you like, call the breeders and ask them about allergic issues- see what you find- your allergy can be unique, so go and meet potential dogs of their breed and be sure!

You want to go with a dog that has the shortest of hair.
With the fact that you like labs (as do I) this may be different but very nice.
I feel in love with the Shar Pei. They have many characteristics as Labs do. They look very different with their very short, prickly hair, and abundance of wrinkles. Very faithful, loving attentive and obedient dog breed.
Check out dog breeds at the akc web site.
Good Luck and Happy Hunting for that Good Dog!

I say try going to a pet store and hopefully being able to walk in the door without spotting any dogs until you reach the adoption area. See what dogs they have and ask to see each one at a time. If they all make you allergic, then you have one of two choices...allergy pills and get a dog, or time to think of getting another pet like a cat or fish.

There's no such thing as a hypoallergenic breed, but some breeds are better suited than others. There's a list in the link below of such breeds and it includes ones to avoid. Good luck.

Look at the Portuguese Water Dog. They do not shed and they are very sweet. They come in two coat types, wavy and curly. The wavys can look a bit like a lab mix (to the untrained eye).
http://www3.sympatico.ca/sharmink/ <--- that link is to a breeder, I am not recommending it, just showing you pictures. You should do research before looking for a breeder.

Are you sure its the dog and not some product that is used on or near the dog? Poodles and schnauzers are great for people with allergies, except they have to be groomed.

a Poodle still would be the best dog for you!
Otherwise try to go next to a Terrier, Airedale, Irish Terrier, Jack or Parson Russels.., because they too don't lose hairs and they are 'good' for allergics.

I have a Border Terrier, he has not triggered asthma or allergies with me as some pets in the past have. They are fun little dogs...described as a big dog in a little dog's body.

Unfortunately, the only choices you have are poodles or poodle mixes. They are cross bred with a lot of different dogs and some are really cute!! I love the goldendoodles...soooo sweet!
