Very good question.Having read other answers,it occurs to me that there are a lot of country dwellers on this site and horse lovers judging by the answers! I ,however, love horses.live in the country but still dislike huge piles of horse **** outside my house (stables 100 yds away,so frequent happening) that I cannot avoid when coming out of my drive,so car wheels always covered in it which then splashes over the paintwork. They should be made to clean it up like dog owners have to ,or pay a fine. There should not be one rule for the dog owners and another for the horsey set!

As well as dog poo being alot more harmful, especially to children and other animals, horse poo doesn't smell nearly as bad!
Also, think about it; have you ever tried getting off a horse, picking up it's poo in a plastic bag (which many are afraid of) and getting back on again on say a main road?
It's down right dangerous some of the time!

Dog poo has harmful bacteria in it which can cause blindness in people. Horse poo isn't as dangerous and is a good fertilizer. Plus because horses only eat plant material, their poo decomposes faster and is 'environmentally friendly'. As for police horses pooing on the street, although it may look horrible, nobody is going to step in it accidentally are they? It's big enough to dodge!

well I don't have many horses walking down my cul de sac shitting on my driveway, but there is an annoying dog that does it. Im sure if someone in my street owned a horse that was shitting all over our drives they would soon be asked to clean up after it, sadly the dog owner in my street never gets asked because she is a ***** and would probably stab you for asking. Also dog poo can spread disease and horse poo doesn't.

I would think that the places you have to pick up dog poo, are not places for keeping horses. I know out here in the country, we sure as hell don't go around picking up dog poo, and our horses stay in a pasture.

I've heard this argument from dog owners who don't want to clear up after their dogs. It's simple, dogs eat meat and leave dangerous piles all over the place containing nasty bacteria, worms and all sorts of nasties. It's also very unpleasant to get on your shoes or pram wheels. It doesn't break down quickly either. Whereas horses are vegetarian and their crap doesn't contain as many nasties, it doesn't stick to everything it comes into contact with and, not only breaks down quickly ,but actualy fertilises the earth.

Some people think that horse manure isn't as bad because we find it useful for our gardens, but dog dump was used to tan leather a long time ago.....doesn't make it smell any better though.
A pile of horse crap is far more visible than a dog mine, so you are less likely to tread in it. But have you ever rode a cycle into a pile of frozen horse turd on a dark morning in the middle of winter?.........nasty fall......ow!!
CLEAN IT UP!!!
Also, why should horse riders get away with this, when i can be fined £60 for dropping a sweet wrapper?

One of the reasons I think it because the horses poo is totally organic and not harmful to any humans, where as dog poo can be very harmful, plus think of how many horses you see to how many dogs you see walking about, plus also I have yet to see a horse in my local park where all the children play.

I do understand where you are coming from but you see a lot more dog poo around and you are more likely to see horse poo than dog poo. I hate it when my children go to the park and step in dog's mess, it normally ends up on their clothes aswell. Yuk!

There are a number of reasons. To start with there are a lot more dogs in cities than there are horses.
Dogs crap on the pavement and in parks. Horses tend to crap in the road where you're less likely to tread in it. Dog muck is a major health hazard and spreads various diseases and the toxicara worm. Because horses are vegetarian, their output is quite harmless - and is very good for the garden.
