When I have people over my house my dog will compusively lick them. She doesn't do it to me or my husband, but when people come over I can't get her to stop and have to lock her in a room until they leave. Anyone have something similiar happen? How can I train her to stop?

She has "packed"... and in her mind these people are coming into her pack...

She wants to dominate them... licking or grooming is an Alpha thing... she is going to make sure they know she is the Alpha of the house and make them stay still while she grooms them... probably the more they try to move away the more insistent she is to make them "stay still"....

She is saying to them... I am the Alpha= you need to recognize this = and I ain't gonna stop until you do...

Perhaps you and your husband have already submitted to her Grooming so in her mind... there is no need to bother with you. Because, you have already recognized her as the Alpha... heehee - spoiled dog - is what most people would say...

My dog licks me all of the time, but barely ever does it to guests. It doesn't bother me, but it does to other people in my family. We are teaching my dog not to lick by holding her mouth closed for a second and saying a firm "No" when she licks. Eventually she realizes that if she licks that you will say "No" to her and not be happy with her. If she stops licking after you tell her "No", then praise her. Most dogs are smart enough to realize that if they don't lick then they will get praised and if they do, then they get told "No". (Usually just saying "No" in a firm voice is enough for your dog to realize that it did something wrong and you can praise it once it corrects it.)

My dog was very selective among visitors in the matter of licking. She would lick such persons only who are well known for their love for dogs. Some of them had no dogs at home for several months and I cannot say that my dog licked him because of the scent of another dog.How could my dog sort out as to who is a dog lover and who is not ,remains a mystery for me.The dogs licking some one is its way of welcome, as also a show of love for the guest. Your dog is with you all the time so might not have felt it necessary to show his love for you by licking.

he wants to see if they taste s like other things he licks.you should stop him, most people dont want that and are reluctant to say so.think about ,what if people did what dogs do,would that be accepable? no but because he is a dog does that make it OK.I think not.
And I bet you are de senseitized to he barking but that dosent mean others are.

She's a friendly dog, & your guests taste better than you or your husband.
