We have an 8 month male Spoodle puppy. He is hyperactive, but gets lots of exercise on a regular basis. However, my wife and I work, and as a result he does spend a lot of time in a medium sized backyard.

Some days he's great - but other days - he can be quite destructive. He likes to dig holes - both in the lawn, and in garden beds, he likes pull apart shrubs and small trees, pull off clothes off the washing line (how he jumps that high I dont know) and above all - loves to chew on anything he can find. He has heaps of toys, gets a new bone each day etc - but nothing seems to be enough!

We have not taken him to puppy training as we've heard mixed stories about their value and have tried to train him ourselves. He walks on a leash fine, is well behavored at the park - but when he's alone we can't be there to keep an eye on him.

If anyone who's got some experience in this matter please help me out.

Thankyou

I am a dog walker who has to deal with many poorly trained dogs. I like to use prong collars to begin what little training I can do with my clients, as I only see them half an hour a day so I can't spend any extra time training them (not my job anyway). However, some owners look at the prong collar and think that it's cruel to the dog. I know how to use it, so how can I explain to them that it's a training tool and does not hurt the dog.

To those who will come and say "How can you use prong collars, they're so cruel and you're so mean!!!!" I'm not listening to you as my opinion on how useful prong collars are can't be changed. I'm asking a question on how to speak to the owners to try and make them feel better, not on whether or not prong collars hurt the dog. Any thoughts?

My dog had cancer and I had to put her down yesterday. What do I say (politely) to people who 1) Second guess my decision and 2) Suggest I get another dog, as if she meant nothing. I guess I'm too emotional right now to figure out how to be nice. I feel caught between people who've never had pets and feel I should just get a new dog and people who love their pets and feel I put her down too soon. I didn't want her suffering anymore, plain and simple. Did anyone else go through this after euthanizing a pet?

My husband resued her last night and she looks to be about 2 to 3 months old. last night she did not make a noise when i put her in the bathroom to goto bed but tonight she is going nuts. she had not made a single noise until 11:00 tonight. Is she scared or do they all do this? Should I leave a light on for her or what? I would let her roam but I wouldnt have a house left because she chews everything up. would it be better if a got her a kennal?

Since it has been quite nice outside lately, my pink nosed dog has been spending a fair amount of time in the backyard. She loves to sunbathe but I'm worried her pale color will cause a sunburn. Should I use sunscreen, can it be a baby human type, and how often will it need to be reapplied if so?

She is a 10 month old shepherd / ? mix. She doesn't bury anything...just digs (and digs) holes. The holes are small (probably would hold a quart to a gallon of water). We have an older dog also, but she knows better (or is just too lazy).

All my life I wanted a Basset Hound. In November my husband agreed and we got one. She has been a lot of hard work but I expected it having many dogs as a child. We did the research and started to "raise" her. We have had her now for almost 6 months and she is now 8 months old. No matter what she does my husband treats her like she is the "red headed" step-child. He calls her stupid all the time and threatens to sell her everytime she does something naughty. I sit down and tell him to stop it. He says she will just ruin our house. And when we have to do things differently because of her he makes it a HUGE deal. I love her so much and I realize she is just in her puppy stage but he doesn't. He apologizes to me and her when he acts wrong towards her but I feel she may get depressed. I know that dogs can understand how you feel and so if he calls her stupid all the time, she may get depressed. I just don't know what to do. I love my dog and I love my man? Help!

I will be getting a yorkie puppy that's 8-9 weeks old. Is it alright to live her alone while everyone's at work? I don't want to take her to a dog daycare or a dog sitter. Is she going to be fine if I live her in a play pen with lots of toys and a wee wee pad to do her business. I will also provide her all the food she will need for the day. I will be away for 8 hours on the week days, and I will bring her to work with me for 6 hours during the weekends. Will she be alright?

I'm at my wits end. We adopted a dog almost 2 weeks ago. She will not go potty outside. We started crate training her but she learned how to open the door herself. So today, I actually tied the door closed with bread ties. I don't know what else to do. I can't praise her if she won't go outside!

Sunday we were outside from 9:20 in the morning literally all day until around 4:30. She pottied in the house 1 min after we came in. I've tried walking her all around the yard and all around the church next door to us. I've even tried tieing her right near the potty area we want her to use. I repeat the "hurry up, go potty" command hundreds of times. Tonight I thought she was actually going to go, she squatted but when I said "good girl" she stood up. We were out in the rain for 40 mins.

I feel awful. I put her in her crate this morning after we went out, she was in there while I was at work, then from 3:00 pm on I've been taking her out every 30-60 mins. and nothing. Help!

We had to put my 9 year old male Maltese to sleep today. He was in severe renal failure. Bailey was my little shadow...he followed me everywhere. I'm certainly not ready for a new dog, but how do I get through this awful time? He was my heart.

My friend's 2 year old Dachshund wasn't feeling well and she was taking her to the vet today but she said last night the dog suddenly just went limp and is now paralyzed. She has 3 crushed vertabrae. The vet wants to put her down but my friend says as long as the dog can use the bathroom, she is going to take care of her. Is it true that these dogs are common to have back problems? Should she put the dog down? I just want to be a good friend. How to help her?
