We had to put my 9 year old male Maltese to sleep today. He was in severe renal failure. Bailey was my little shadow...he followed me everywhere. I'm certainly not ready for a new dog, but how do I get through this awful time? He was my heart.

karen...thank you for your comment...no it wasn't the result of the recall...it was an on-going condition that just got to be too much for him.

So sorry for your loss.
Was it due to the food recalls?
Cry your heart out, you have lost a dear friend.
Do something in his memory. Plant a tree, volunteer at your local shelter. Give yourself time to heal and try to remember the happy times. Our hearts go out to you.

I am so sorry. I had to put my cat to sleep 3 years ago, I had her for 17 years and never put any thought into the fact she would not always be there for me. It took me over a year to get another cat, I never wanted to feel that sense of loss again. Since I have learned it was part of the experience of being a pet owner. I now have a dog and two cats, all are rescued animals as was my first cat.

I am so sorry to hear of your Dogs Passing.I had a Pekingese his name was mick I got him when he was 3 months old and he got sick when he was 8 yrs old and me and my Husband had to take him to the Vet in Columbus and they did ex rays and blood work and he had lost so much weight,They was not for sure what was wrong with him ,They said they could do surgery But this may not solve his problem. They brought him into me and I was so Upset and crying ,Here is my Dear friend who was always with me and I had to make the choice to put him to sleep because he was suffering,My Husband bless his heart stayed with him as they put Him to sleep and then we brought him home and again my dear Husband berried him in our Back yard.I have a picture of my dog on my computer stand where I can see him .Getting over a pet is just as hard as getting over a loved one.You have to mourn and talk about him and cry over him.Rember the good time you have had with him.It will get better with time.

Grief is normal. Have a good cry when you need to. If the grief is too consuming go for a brisk walk.

Getting a new dog to focus on helps. A new dog can't replace the dog you lost but you can find another pet to love.

I am sooo sorry for your loss and I know how you feel. Here is a poem you should read. It will have you shedding tears, but it will also help you find a little comfort.
