Since it has been quite nice outside lately, my pink nosed dog has been spending a fair amount of time in the backyard. She loves to sunbathe but I'm worried her pale color will cause a sunburn. Should I use sunscreen, can it be a baby human type, and how often will it need to be reapplied if so?

Yeah, you should use sunscreen. Unfortunately, all pink skinned animals can get sunburnt. And I don't know about your weather where you live, but ours has been horrible, so I totally do not blame her for soaking in the wonderful sun we've been getting lately!

I use sunscreen on my horse since she has a pink nose - really, anything that's handy that has zinc oxide. Remember that just like humans, sunscreen can wear off on your dog (or rub off, especially if she rolls around in the grass!), so you might need to reapply it every so often. I kind of follow the rule with humans - apply it, keep them inside of a little bit so it can soak in, then let them out and play. I'd keep an eye to see if she rolls or rubs her nose in something and reapply it, or reapply it after every other hour or so.

Be safe and enjoy the sun!

I think there are certain dogs that need the protection from the sun. Like Siberian Huskys are used to living in cold climates so they can't get overheated. If you put sunscreen on your dog, use sunscreen intended for dogs. Oh, also I read somewhere that dogs witth their ears pointing up need protection from the sun in there if there is no hair there.

I use sunscreen on my all white pitty because otherwise he burns in the sun really fast!

Yes, they do get sunburnt. I have a white Italian Greyhound. You really need to take them out of the sun from 10a until 2p. I wouldn't suggest sunscreen. Dogs can be really sensitive to that. Your best bet is cool water if they do get sunburn.

Use your judgment. Has she gotten a sunburn yet? Maybe she doesn't need it after all. Use whatever kind you want and follow the directions, if you decide to use it.
