I'm at my wits end. We adopted a dog almost 2 weeks ago. She will not go potty outside. We started crate training her but she learned how to open the door herself. So today, I actually tied the door closed with bread ties. I don't know what else to do. I can't praise her if she won't go outside!
Sunday we were outside from 9:20 in the morning literally all day until around 4:30. She pottied in the house 1 min after we came in. I've tried walking her all around the yard and all around the church next door to us. I've even tried tieing her right near the potty area we want her to use. I repeat the "hurry up, go potty" command hundreds of times. Tonight I thought she was actually going to go, she squatted but when I said "good girl" she stood up. We were out in the rain for 40 mins.
I feel awful. I put her in her crate this morning after we went out, she was in there while I was at work, then from 3:00 pm on I've been taking her out every 30-60 mins. and nothing. Help!

Thanks for the suggestions. The people who had her before said she was trained but had some accidents in the house because they didn't get her outside in time. But that she understood that outside meant potty.
I tried buying wee wee pads, but she won't use them.
I can't take her off the leash because she runs away. That's her other character flaw that we weren't told about. She runs out the door when it's open and we aren't paying attention. So now we have a baby gate that we put up to block her access to the front door.
I thought maybe it was an adjustment thing, that she didn't really know us and didn't know our area. She was adopted by someone else who returned her after 18 hours because she spent the whole time hiding under their table. She hid for the first day here and then was ok. She is very loving and great with my 11 year old. She's a jack crossed with a pointer (we think). I know it's going to take time. Any other thoughts? Thanks for the help!

She is 1 year old. I had read about taking the poops outside so I did that. I grabbed them a few times and brought them outside and put them in the same place. That's where I take her.
I'm feeling terrible. I put her in the crate yesterday morning and from 3 pm yesterday afternoon have been taking her out of the crate and immediately outside every hour or so. The last time we went out was 11:00 pm last night. We go outside and she walks around and sniffs then starts to whine like she wants to go in. We stay out at least 15 minutes each time (one of them was 40 minutes). She went out at 6:30 this morning and still nothing! Then again at 8:00 and now I'm at work and she's in the crate at home. I don't know what else to do. I hate this part and feel terrible about having her be in the crate all the time, but I really think it's the only way to get her to potty outside so I can at least praise her for doing the right thing. How long can she physically go without going?

Is she on leash when you are trying to get her to potty?
She might be scared of you 'new people' since you've only had her for 2 weeks.
When I first adopted my first dog she held it for 4 straight days, never had an accident, and I finally just let her off leash to see if she'd go and she pottied FOREVER!!! She never had an accident in the house over those days and I couldn't figure out what her problem was. She just wasn't comfortable going that close to me yet.
When your dog stops to squat, DO NOT PRAISE until the act is DONE!! I know this makes no sense based on how you train other behaviors...but what happened to you tends to happen to everyone! If you interrupt, they're likely to stop what they're doing.
Likely she was not potty trained properly wherever she was last. They might have hit her for pottying in the house or somewhere where she wasn't supposed to. Since she was abused for pottying before, how does she know it's safe to potty now? She probably will only go if you're not looking.
It will take time to build the trust, but I bet that's what will do it. Just be patient.

Yes, any dog at any age can be potty trained. It's just it's easier with small dogs because they learn faster, like kids; e.g. Kids can learn languages really fast, in the other way when adults try it's harder, but possible. So yes it can be potty trained. You're just gonna have to be real patient, because it might take a while, i don't know maybe minimun a month and maximun like 2 months. But you might be lucky if he's a smart dog :) Good luck. If you have problems you could e-mail me and I'll help :)

I have a Jack Russell who was very temper mental about using the potty... And i know this seems gross but when she poos in the house first if you catch her in the act scold her, if not take her to the mess and tell her no and take her outside immediately, now the almost gross part collect the poo and take it to the area you wish for her to use and leave it, to give it her scent. Then repeat the first action by taking her outside after scolding and eventually she will catch on. That's what we did and within a week he was going to the door when he had to go outside. Also there is a pheromone sold in most pet stores intended for the piddle pads that can be used outside it helps them to know it's OK to use the bathroom there. Also how old is she?

I have a way to train puppy's that works very well.
Take the poop outside and put it where you want the dog to crap. I always put it in the dirt and then you don't have a mess in your grass. Also if you can get some urine soaked up in a newspaper or whatever and rub it outside so that the smell is
there.Take the puppy out and put his nose in it and say Good dog.
Inside you need to get some spray that will elimitate the oder.

Try using potty pads in the house...then take the potty pads outside. See if she'll go on them then. Eventually, she should potty on the grass where the pads used to be.

you may have to literally "walk it out" of her. put her on a leash and take her for a long walk around your neighborhood. eventually (and it will not take all day), she will go. also, if you adopted her, ask the people you got her from - either the shelter or the people who surrendered her may give you all the insight you need to what her tricks are (she may already have a routine you're not aware of). good luck.

Find someone else that has a dog, and put the two together. Or go to a dog park, and let her be with other dogs. Maybe she'll see the other dogs going, and get the idea.
