Could the standard ever be changed, and under what circumstances?

My dog is 6 months. First dog I've ever had. I'm a cat person, my hubby is the dog person. The dog doesn't lift it's leg to do his business. It squats like the female dogs do. I read that typically at 5 mos, dogs instinctually know to life the leg. I've never seen him do this, not by hydrant, not by a tree, no where. Do you think he might have some sort of problem? I just don't know that to think. One of hubby's friends makes a joke that the dog must be a girl, any thoughts? Thanks.

From my (admittedly very limited) understanding of breed standards for conformation, it appears that different colourings in some breeds are considered faults (eg. white patches on the chests of some breeds, or brown colouring in a shih-tzu), whilst in other breeds there is no such distinction (eg. a greyhound can be black, white, blue, brindle etc...etc...) and the different colourings are not considered a fault in any way.

My understanding was also that breed standards were decided based upon characteristics needed to perform the job they were originally bred for. If that is correct, what difference would it make if the dog was a different colour? Why would it make a difference in some breeds and not others?

I have a 9 month old shepherd who is a perfect gentleman and obeys all the time! I also have a 1 year old lab who is not ladylike at all! She doesn't listen and when you say "Sit" she looks at you like you have 2 heads. She used to behave before we got our shepherd - is she retaliating? What can I do to rectify the situation?

I just bought my daughter a male puppy yorkie terrier. What would be the best route to take in training him to use the bathroom on those little blue cloths? We are away from home the majority of the day so he goes to my neighbor with her dogs. I want him to be trained to go on the matt at night and outside during the day.

Also, supposing that the otterhound did become extinct in the UK, but not in other countries, what would be the effect wrt KC registering an otterhound from another country? (eg taking a show quality dog from another country and registering here - is there a mechanism for this?)

Would it be the last time an otterhound was seen in a British show ring?

i posted a question a few nights ago about rehoming my dog and got lots of support, I didnt really want to send her to a shelter and her be there for months, i have a couple coming to see her and meet me to discuss her, i have been very honest with them and they sound very promising, theyve had a dog for years and had to have her put to sleep...anyway i'll reserve judgement till i meet them but my question is...once ive found a home is it better to do a gradual getting to know the dog, with walks and visits etc before taking her or just a clean break?

What is the closest a australian shepherd has bonded to u? I want to get one but I want to make sure they bond well. Also, if I was to raise her/him would she bond more with me than anyone else? I plan to take her to the park most everyday, She will have 2 of my other dogs to play with, and she will have Acres to play on.

I know that chocolate is toxic to dogs, by an unpronouncable ingredient. My dog is a West Highland White Terrier and is probably about 14 pounds. Today, she stole a "samoa" girl scout cookie, and a thin mint from one of my family members. A samoa doesn't have a lot of chocolate, just a tiny bit of chocolate drizzled on the top, and a little on the bottom, although the thin mint is all chocolate. They are a little bigger than 1 and 1 half quarters, each. She hasn't shown any sign on toxication, and we didn't call the doctor. It has probably been from 30-45 minutes since she gobbled them up. If she starts vomiting, what should I do?

Is it true that neutering a male dog later in life (as in no longer a puppy) can change the dogs personality? I've got a 6 year old male Cairn Terrier that is very sweet and playful right now, and I'm afraid that if I have him fixed now, it will make him vicious. Is it true? How does fixing a dog later in life affect the dog?

I've recently given a home to a young GSD. For whatever reason, her previous owners had seriously underfed her, with the result that she is extremely underweight and was a pitiful sight. My vet assures me that she has no underlying medical problems that contribute to her condition, and together we have devised a diet to provide the maximum nutrition and weight gain that her digestive system can cope with. The diet is working well, for a 14 month old pup, she is doing the growing in all directions that should have happened months ago, her coat has become lustrous and “oily”, she's active, her stamina increases daily but she still looks like a walking skeleton. So my question is, how long does it take for an emaciated dog to start putting some “fat on the bones”.
