My dog is 6 months. First dog I've ever had. I'm a cat person, my hubby is the dog person. The dog doesn't lift it's leg to do his business. It squats like the female dogs do. I read that typically at 5 mos, dogs instinctually know to life the leg. I've never seen him do this, not by hydrant, not by a tree, no where. Do you think he might have some sort of problem? I just don't know that to think. One of hubby's friends makes a joke that the dog must be a girl, any thoughts? Thanks.

Oh you first time dog owners!!!
Some Males will lift their legs and some don't. Has nothing to do with any problem the dog has. I have found that some males who have been nutered before 8 months of age usually don't lift their leg ever.

Tally - I had a male dog that was neutered when he was 6.5 months old. It took him awhile but he always lifted his leg to do his business. Of course his aim was off and he always peed on his front paws. One of my neighbors had a male dog that never lifted it legs when it peed. Guess there are squatters and non-squatters. Tell your husbands friend to stop picking on your dog.

Don't hold the dog to silly standards like that. He'll lift his leg when he's ready.

A lot of time they imitate other dogs. Some lift their legs some don't, it really doesn't matter.

My friend has a female dog that lifts HER leg because she grew up with all male dogs.
