Once you find a dog you like, research about its temperment and such so you know you are getting the right dog. You can also try http://www.petfinder.com if you were looking into adopting an adult dog. They also have alot of puppies from just a couple of months old to 10 years old. If you just want one from a breeder, make sure its a reputable breeder! don't get one from a petstore, those pups are from puppymills.

Oh yeah, just make sure your 13 year old is ready for a dog. Maybe you can quiz her on how to take care of it and things like that. My uncle wanted to buy my cousin a puppy for her 14th birthday. She wound up getting her a toy poodle, it was a very cute dog. But she was just starting high school and was always out with her friends that he was the one who wound up taking care of it. He thought getting a dog would be a breeze, well that was until he had to start taking care of it! Just make sure you guys are ready for one.

Both would be great for a responsible 13 year old. Other small breeds that should work are Shih Tzus, Papillons,
Maltese, and a variety of others. Don't forget to check out the mixed breeds in your local shelter or closest rescue groups!

myself, I like the chihuahuas better, but u should get them young, & make sure u take them out to meet other people, this way it keeps them more acceptable to visitors & company.
Maybe I like this breed better, as I have 1, + her puppies, (4).
However, Yorkies do not shed, & are very friendly as well. Not much help am I?..

Yorkie's are cuter but chihuahuas may be less maintance. I would suggest a poodle or even a yorkie-poo since poodle hair is less likely to cause allergies.
