According to the ASPCA (a excellent source considering they run the pet poison hotline):

"Onions, Garlic, Chives
Did You Know… Onions, garlic, chives and other species of the plant genus Allium can be potentially toxic to pets?

Allium species contain sulfur compounds known as disulfildes, which if ingested in large quantities can cause gastrointestinal irritation and could even result in damage to red blood cells. While cats are more sensitive to disulfides, dogs and other species of animals are also susceptible to Allium poisoning if enough plant material is consumed. Therefore, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center advises companion animal owners to avoid feeding pets onions, garlic and other Allium plants."

Yes! Onions are very bad for dogs! Onions cause hemolytic anemia, which means that the red blood cells break down leaving the dog short of oxygen. Onion poisoning can occur with a single ingestion of large quantities or with repeated meals containing small amounts of onion. The condition generally improves once the dog is prevented from eating any further onion. The poisoning may occur a few days after the dog has eaten the onion. At first dogs affected by onion poisoning show gastroenteritis with vomiting and diarrhea, weakness and show little or no interest in food. The red pigment from the burst blood cells appears in an affected dog's urine making it dark colored. The dog will experience shortness of breath because the red blood cells that carry oxygen through the body are reduced in number. Other symptoms are elevated body temperature, confusion, and increased heart rate. Seek veterinary care immediately!

Onions are toxic to dogs. They are one of the more dangerous people foods that dogs can get a hold of. In the right quantity they will cause a complete shutdown of the internal organs. It is a long and debilitating death. The chance of recovery even with treatment is slim.
Two years ago the vet next door to my shop had a dog whose owner used onions in an attempt to help her dog with some minor ailment. She believes in natural remedies. The dog took two days to die. The owner wouldn't let go, she used all of the natural healing powers that she had at her disposal, coming to the vet clinic for most of both of the days.
You really have to investigate, before using herbs, botanicals or any other natural or holistic remedy on your pet. Just because it's good for people doesn't mean it will help your dog.

Yes. They are toxic and can kill a dog. One little piece of onion isn't going to hurt your dog, but onion should be avoided. If your dog has ingested onion, call your vet's office and talk to them about it. The amount they can safely digest will be dependant on the dog's weight and metabolism.

"Onions and garlic contain the toxic ingredient thiosulphate. Onions are more of a danger.

Pets affected by onion toxicity will develop haemolytic anaemia, where the pet’s red blood cells burst while circulating in its body. Symptoms include Hemolytic Anemia, labored breathing, liver damage, vomiting, diarrhea, discolored urine.

The poisoning occurs a few days after the pet has eaten the onion. All forms of onion can be a problem including dehydrated onions, raw onions, cooked onions and table scraps containing cooked onions and/or garlic. Left over pizza, Chinese dishes and commercial baby food containing onion, sometimes fed as a supplement to young pets, can cause illness.

While garlic also contains the toxic ingredient thiosulphate, it seems that garlic is less toxic and large amounts would need to be eaten to cause illness."

I don't know, it depends how much you give to the dog, but you probaly shouldn't try it and if you did and nothing has changed with the dog that it probaly wouldn't have effected it.
