There's been an old tradition (at least in my country) - a husband is a 'hunter' who brings prey home (actually money), and a wife is a 'hearth keeper', she raises children and does most housework. Her job usually lets her work not as hard as men and her salary is lower. Although both a wife and a husband combine their incomes which is then spent equally.

I've heard often a husband and a wife in a Western family don't combine their incomes and spend money on their own, is this true?
How do they maintain the balance then? Do they divide housework among them evenly or the wife has to do more work anyway? Maybe the amount of housework has become lower?
Are women's salaries lower than men's ones?

I'm asking about Western countries, but you may also tell about how it's going in others. Thanks for your replies in advance.

of being debt free and not have to pay back student loans. I've been paying on my student loans for 6 years now and I still have quite a ways to go. Her college cost more than mine.

I am having trouble dealing with the resentment that I feel towards them for not helping me out when I was in college as well. They were in the same financial situation, so there is no clear reason as to why they didn't help me.

Should I confront them about this? Am I wrong to feel this way?

My fiance of 1year and boyfriend of 2years just found out about a 6 year old child that might be his son. The mother was a good friend of his and it happened. They lost touch, she never tried to contact him though regarding the child. We ran into her sister recently and her sister showed us a picture of the baby. Looks like him!! The mom states that she is not sure and that she doesn't want to press the issue because her fiance belives the baby is his and she wants it to remain that way. She is a good mom and my fianace does not want to cause her any problems. But outside of us he has two girls this childs age, and this is a small world and we beleive all the siblings should know each other (@least for incest sake) How should he go about this without recking this womans happy home? Also anything could happen if he is the father shouldn't this child have the right to know.

Why is it when you get it your way you feel bad and feel like a jerk and that you shouldn't have even insisted but you really needed it to be this way. And when you give in you feel mad and like they are selfish and always get their way? Is there every any winning?

My dad (55) and his brother (62) were always close, both families staying in one house. His brother being older, was always the mean one. Our family was always ill treated, when we were given our allowances it was always half the amount they were given. They said things like we living on charity. All this hurt my mum alot, one day we moved away,my dad was refused even a small percent of shares in the business. But he never complained. The first year was very hard, sometimes not even having enough money to buy a loaf of bread. Im glad to say some how my dad worked night and day and things started getting better. Only to find out that my uncle and them are worse financially, today my dad sends them money for food, clothes, spending. etc. I once thought revenge would be a good feeling, but i dont find any satisfaction, i feel very sad for them. Have you felt this way?

I have known men that have cheated on their girlfriends or wife and usually it goes on for years that no one wants to give up the man. I have seen it twice when the man does not end up with niether one of the girls. Once I seen it happen when the man left his wife for the mistress and she took him to Australia so he would not go back to his wife.

My parents have hurt me so many times, in different ways (nothing physical) & now I can't stand being anywhere near them.
The problem is, I'm stuck living with them until me and my boyfriend can afford our own place.
How can I take living here for atleast another couple of months, when I can't stand being in the same place as them for a second?

I'm still bummed out about what this nursing advisor told me - she said i was "too young". I think she saw my eagerness as a sign of this "overimposed unncessary energy of youth" - like i can't "comprehend and understand" nursing as well b/c i'm "too excited" compared to if I apply when I'm 25. I've always had a goal to be done and working when i'm 22 or 23. I'm 20 years old - 3 yr. student finishing my nursing pre-reqs. I volunteer at one of the units at the state hospital, I'm a nursing assistant and to them i'm still "too young". I don't know what else to do anymore. People have advised me that when i'm finished with classes, just to work as a medical assistant and maybe then i'll get recognition. I don't know what to do...many people i know in the beginning have started towards nursing but all just quit and moved on to other majors because no one wants to "wait" just to get into nursing...Others say to the LPN then RN but i heard it wastes time. I'm tired of waiting....

Okay, so my daughters dad promised to pick her up on Mother's day so I could have a little me time. She was all excited, but he never showed or bothered to call. She tried to call him a few times and he didn't answer. Should I give him an ultimatum and tell him he's either in or out, or should I let him see her when it is convenient for him, which is only every month or so. She is almost 4 and doesn't understand why her daddy doesn't come see her when all her friends have their daddys all the time. What do you guys think I should do?

parallel universes? Do you ever wonder how your life would be today if you had made a different choice in the past? What would you have changed and what do you think it would have changed in your life?

I would like to know how my life would have turned out had I been more of a partier in highschool and spent more time with friends than with school work and helping my parents on the farm. I always wanted to go to college and get a good job, then find a sepcial person, get married, and have kids. Well, I have the job but the rest of my plan is not working out so well. I think I did things in the smart order, but maybe not the right order...

my family just found out that my 16 year old little sis is pregnant by her 15 yr old boyfriend. she started staying at a friends house last yr then started dating her brother. the mother of the boy has insisted that he was at an aunt house when she would spend the night with her friends. i know its stupid but my father actually believed her. since being told the big news, we have found out that this mother had these kids sleeping together, allows her son to smoke pot, and buys cigeretts for him. now it seems she has brain washed my sis. she doesnt want us to do anything for her, she is trying to illegally obtain her birth certificate so she can take her to the doctor. when i called her up to tell her i would take her, the lady got on the phone with me screaming "nobody is going to take my f****** grandkid. she has done this several times. we dont want to keep them out of my sisters life, but she just seems obsessed. how do we get her home and help her? we live in ga, what is the law.

I feel so overwelmed now. I am a mother of 4..3 boys of mine and 1 girl that is my stepdaughter (I consider my own, we have full custody of her). I am constantly saying "do this and that" "dont' do this or that" "pick up" AGGGHHHH!!!! HOW do I stop nagging BUT get them to do their chores and HELP out around the house? How do I get my step daughter to stop BOSSING and tearing her room up when she is supposed to be sleeping? Oops..I forgot she is 4, the boys are 9, 6, and 2. I have tried everything! I am very consistent. HOW in the world do I get them to help and to respect and to MIND? I hate having to repeat myself or for them to keep asking after being told. Okay...please some serious answers! I am to the point now, where I just need to be alone. It seems frustrating to be with them. I know that sounds crude, but I am sick of yelling and nagging at them. I love them and don't want to keep going like this. I am just overwelmed.

Would you move to live in a compound in Nigeria for 3 years with your husband (for his work) and two primary school aged children for USD450,000 for the 3 years? All accomodation and food etc would also be included. That would mean we could pay off our huge mortgage and then move back to Australia without struggling financially. Has anyone done this already or knows someone that has? What facilities are in the compounds?

My parents were totally excited when I first starting going out with my current boyfriend. Mostly because they hated my ex. Now that they see me getting to enjoy more things in life I feel like they are sorta jealous. My dad has even commented to me that I am better then him now. I totally don't feel this way and it's like my dad doesn't even give my boyfriend a chance and my boyfriend can tell. My boyfriend doesnt deserve this and neither do I but what do we do?

We are moving into a new house and there is an apartment-like room over the garage. Now, the garage isn't attatched to the house. My mom doesn't think I'm mature and responsible enough to have my own house. Honestly, I am. I do my own laundry, my own dishes (by hand when we have a dishwasher because I'm OCD and its kinda annoying eating off dishes my "family" touched with their hands). I actually do things properly. I can organize the laundry properly where as my mom just throws it all in there (silk panties with dark blue jeans and black towels) I've asked her SOOOOOOOOOO many times to not do my laundry. Me and my mom don't get along at all. On Mother's Day we spent the whole day fighting. If you knew some one on menopause, you would understand. Anyways she says I don't do my own laundry or unload the dishes or feed the cat, this is always because she comes in and does it while I'm sleeping. Unfair, right? Whatever. Now you know the whole situation and where I stand, what could I do?

I don't have any real work experience besides stuff done as "paid favors" from my family. I was wondering any of you who remember your first jobs or have any experience saving your own money?
