I'm still bummed out about what this nursing advisor told me - she said i was "too young". I think she saw my eagerness as a sign of this "overimposed unncessary energy of youth" - like i can't "comprehend and understand" nursing as well b/c i'm "too excited" compared to if I apply when I'm 25. I've always had a goal to be done and working when i'm 22 or 23. I'm 20 years old - 3 yr. student finishing my nursing pre-reqs. I volunteer at one of the units at the state hospital, I'm a nursing assistant and to them i'm still "too young". I don't know what else to do anymore. People have advised me that when i'm finished with classes, just to work as a medical assistant and maybe then i'll get recognition. I don't know what to do...many people i know in the beginning have started towards nursing but all just quit and moved on to other majors because no one wants to "wait" just to get into nursing...Others say to the LPN then RN but i heard it wastes time. I'm tired of waiting....

I've been going to school 3 years straight now and i FEEL like quitting since no one's interested in me wanting to go to school...why try when you're not "good enough" or needed?

Don't let them get you down....I'm 21 and in nursing school, will graduate in Feb 08 Although I do have to "prove" myself being one of the youngest ones in class.
I would say, either find another school that offers nursing....
I have talked to alot of nurses that believe its better to start with your LPN then go for your RN... That is what I decided to do, and alot of school are starting to offer an LPN-RN Bridge program.
Never let anyone tell you, you can't accomplish your goals...there is always a way to get there...it just takes finding it.

Don't give up on yourself just because of some judgmental adviser at a nursing school. I have known many young people to be responsible, skilled, intelligent and caring. Unfortunately many states have nursing boards that limit the number of schools that can offer nursing and within those schools they limit the number of enrollments (which leads to the inevitable "waiting lists"). It has served their purpose in keeping market demand and high salaries, but it has not served our society well. Some states have turned this around and allowed private schools to now offer nursing programs. Also more hospitals are starting internal nursing programs. I would recommend checking into these... you may have to be willing to move to another state to get your education, but if it is really what you want (and it sounds like it is) it will be worth it!

What state/country are you in? I am 21 in nursing school in California. I started at 20 and 90% of my class is under 23. I dont understand why they would say that to you. Are their not any set standards/requirements to get into the program? Just try a different school!

Free Angle is right, try another nursing school.
whatever you do, finish your pre-requisites and keep your grades up.
Good Luck Miss. With your passion, I think you'd make a fine nurse, or even a good doctor.

Try another nursing school. The one you've dealt with at this point isn't the only one in the world.

You're "too young" because you're younger than them. You're excited, and they don't remember feeling that way.
If that is their only complaint, and they do not complain about your work, forget them. Nurses are a tough group as a whole, and they don't like competition. If you want to compete, you have to shake it up.
Good luck.

They probably think that no one will listen to you because you are too young. I wasn't aware that anyone could keep someone from pursuing their education because of their age.
It sounds like age discrimination.

You have to go to school to learn how to nurse?
How hard can it be to breastfeed your baby?
LOL!
