my desktop computer won't switch on. the monitor's fine but the harddisk, when I switch it on, will be alive for just a second before dying again. Do you know what the problem would be? if I can fix it myself? If I have to bring it in for repairs, how much do you think it would cost?

Whenever I'm watching a video or listening to music, the sound volume of it suddenly drops for random periods of time (usually about 10 to 30 secs) and then resumes back to normal (this happens about 4 times in 10 minutes). I've scanned my computer with spybot search and destroy, adaware, and AVG (I don't know if that helps at all...) and nothing seems to work. If any of you know what might be wrong, or how to fix this, please reply!!

I've tried searching all the questions on here, but I recently had to replace my motherboard due to a failure, and I replaced it with an identical model. The PSU is brand new, and the Hard Drive has been tested on another computer and works fine, but I can't get anything when I turn the computer on. All the fans, cooling system, and CD-ROM drive come on, but nothing ever displays on the screen. I've tried reseating the video card and RAM with no success. HOWEVER, ONE time I was able to get the BIOS screen to come up with my Windows Vista CD in the drive, but I didn't have the keyboard plugged in to bring it to setup, and I haven't been able to get it again. Help?

I need to know if this board will support a faster processor.It currently has a Pentium 4 1.60 ghz and I want to go to a Pentium 4 3.0 or3.2 ghz processor if possible.The FSB on the one that's in this oldie but goodie is 400MHz-The new one I want to put in is 800MHz This is a new "Hobby" for me so if my questions seem a little dumb don't laugh too loud!! I recently purchased a new Dell computer and got it this Monday. Today (Friday) I decided to set up the computer, but when I turn on the computer, after the loading bar, the screen goes black and stays like that. I called Dell Tech Support twice (and waited a LONG time) and they were of no help. For those of you who have some knowledge of computers, what do you think may be causing the problem? (Note: The monitor is fine; I tried another monitor and it didn't work either.) Please help.

I am starting to think that my old pc is about done for. I am considering a Mac this time, but I wanted to ask... is the Mac worth the extra money? I am not into computers in a big way... just email, wikipedia, word processing, that sort of thing. Maybe some online chess one in a great while.

Oh yeah. I hate computer problems.
Any thoughts?

i have a gateway celeron and windows xp....i run webroot spyware and nortont anti virus..
if i am using the computer, i leave it for a minute to say go to the bathroom, come back and the pc is frozen....all i know to do is hold in the start button for a few secs and it will turn off...then you can restart again.....any ideas. thanks

About 3 months ago I built this new PC upgrading from a Pentium 2.8GHz processor with 1.75GB of RAM and good size harddrives to boot. (pardon the pun) However the machine that I have built has the following specs:

Core2 Duo -1.86GHz
1GB of RAM (so far)
2 - 200GB harddrives

My 2.8GHz P4 processor, speed-wise, was actually ahead of it's numbers and that included no over-clocking, etc. This new machine seems like it's running at about the same speed. It seemed like this was running much faster when I first installed the OS and programs for the first month or so, now, as I said, it seems like it's just a really fast Pentium 4. I expect FAR more out of this Core2 Duo. What can I check/do to speed it up, and please list anything and everything - maybe there's something I'm missing.

I am currently teaching myself 3ds max, my laptop has been doing fine until now, but now i am starting to do more complex designs, rendering time is starting to get a bit silly! I dont have the exact figures to hand, but my laptop is approx 3Ghz Pentium 4 HT, 1024mbRam, 128mb Graphics. I am on a budget (i.e. ebay here we come!), what sort of spec should i look out for purely to use for rendering in 3ds max?
