my desktop computer won't switch on. the monitor's fine but the harddisk, when I switch it on, will be alive for just a second before dying again. Do you know what the problem would be? if I can fix it myself? If I have to bring it in for repairs, how much do you think it would cost?

The hard disk is probably fine.

BUT, your mainboard could be a problem. Your power supply could be the problem. You MIGHT be able to fix it by disconnecting and reconnecting the power supply from the mainboard and doing likewise with the graphics card.

If you don't feel comfortable doing this, then I would estimate the labor time as being 1-2 hours depending on the exact cause and the parts needed. If you need a new power supply, the cost for that part ranges from $30-90 depending on quality. If it's a new mainboard that you need, that's COULD be expensive. If it's a newer board, you can just get a replacement, typically $50-$200. But if you have an older computer, then you'd likely have to get a bunch of new parts because older parts, including CPU, RAM, and possibly the video card, could be required. Each of these can cost between $50 and $300 depending on how good you want them.

First you need to see if the computer can boot at all.
Go into the bios by hitting the f5 or f8 key. some computers are different.
Then set the boot sequence to be your DVD drive first.
Install your operating system install disk into the drive.
If it is a HDD problem, the computer will boot right up with the DVD rom.

If the hard drive is bad, a new one is very economical now.
You can get 250 GB to 350 GB for about $100.

The biggest issue is reloading the operating system and all the software. If you need someone to do this, it will be best if you install the hard drive first because the shops will charge you $200 for the same drive and $50 to install it.

If you can't install the operating system, I recommend Best Buy geek squad support.

Of course you will need all the original software CDs to reload all the software. And then all your personal settings and networking and internet have to be set up again.

Very do-able if you have all the software and just follow the on screen directions.

Good luck

there could be many causes to this not necessarily your hard disk. if the bios doesnt load at all then the problem is more than likely to do with your motherboard. if its an old pc then try replacing the cmos battery. try removing and reseating the graphic card and ram. check all the cable connections to all your drives are properly connected. try replacing the psu with a better one. use a bicycle pump to blast air to blow off any dust that may be inside the pc case (a large build up of dust can short the motherboard) all else failing replace the motherboard

in the experience that your video cable is detachable at the two the laptop and the back of the video demonstrate, i could attempt to borrow one just to confirm that it is not your cable. a minimum of verify your video cable for breaks or intense bends.
